Maybe the club weren't interested in a buy back clause. He never looked like being able to break into the first team. And if any player doesn't wish to return to his previous club, the buy back clause doesn't exist anyway.

Although, I suspect Jurgen's plan is to use Matip and Gomez with Fabinho as the fourth CB as Tiago's arrival is likely to limit Fabinho's time at CM with Henderson and the new lad both far superior options to him
