I liked every season of the Wire. I remember quite a lot of people saying season 2 was poor but I thought it was great. The Sobotkas were good characters.
It was the quality of the writing that made it so good, its consistency was phenomenal and it was never afraid to "off" a big character. Always a marker of a good show I think.
I thought season 2 was slow. It was needed to show how the "infrastructure" worked, the docks etc but felt a bit too long.
I've just stumbled across WuTang - the American Saga. Really enjoyed the 1st episode, had The Wire-type vibes. Also, remember when they released their first album back in 94/95 - was very different, fresh, and raw compared to a lot of stuff, which is impressive given that the 90's were arguable the halycon era for rap.
