Indeed. But with Sid’s two good examples, robbo and gini. It’s looking more likley we got incredibly lucky so many of our early signings worked rather than some sort of magic code we have cracked in the market.

Do we all still believe Nunez will be what Gary Neville suggested he will? World Class? Is it not just as likely that he continues to be the Chaos, the threat, but ultimately also very undercooked…raw. Missing glorious chances and getting himself into plenty of scraps?

Gakpo, is a young lad, but he really doesn’t look like being a world beater, not just yet. Put it this way… He is showing that he ticks multiple boxes, rather than genuinely worrying defences. Only Diaz really has shown that top level ability and he has sustained a bad double occurrence injury.

Bobby is a goner at the end of this season and Jota is massively struggling for goals.. Salah isn’t getting younger and his form in light of the above has naturally dipped too. A front line full of big question marks..

At the back - Konate can look decent in some games and like a headless chicken in others. He is the single (so called senior) addition at CB since Lovren was sold. Like the front line - The star man (Virgil) is no longer performing at close to his level and his side kick (Matip) looks physically washed up.

So the midfield which has been brutally neglected is going to have to step up. Going into next season… unless there are significant investments into the middle and back, we could be looking at a similar season to this only without European football at all.

I would have to agree with you. I was suggesting that you never know about Mount or Bellingham though. the one that we all want might not be the world beater and the one we don’t, might end up being quality for us. So much in this game is about luck.

The big difference is Klopp doesn’t look like HE has that energy to instil into the players. He doesn’t look like he believes.

If Robbo comes here now or Trent tries to break through now - or Gini was captured - or Mo… It’s likely that they don’t come close to the performance levels they did in 2018/19/20.

I know where you are coming from Steveo, but that 'potential' you have mentioned cost £200m to assemble. It's not an insginifcant amount.

Again, the money has been spent. Has it been spent wisely recently?

It’s a money ball signing again which rather than expecting to work we are hoping it works. It most likely won’t.
I would suggest signing a player with a year left on his contract for £70m is th every opposite of Moneyball!

Suppose we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the final cost. It would be a nuts fee for him alright. He’s worth 40 at best.

So what's the solution? To rebuild the squad with City/Chelsea/Unitedesque money?

Unfortunately, in the modern game we are fighting against our weight and as good or as bad our scouting / recruitment / coaching and management may be we'll never have a sustained period at the very top. There are always going to be periods where we dip, where transfers dont work, managers dont work.

You roll the dice on players, some will work, some wont. We've just had a period where ours in the last 5 years have come up 6s. the last few have been more like 3s...

Time will tell on that one. To be fair the club had to act to prevent the front line running up too many miles and going stale, mirroring the middle.

Let’s say we don’t buy Nunez and used that cash to buy a top class mid or even 2 very capable ones. Does that mean we are better placed now? Quite possibly.

I believe the club has access to the finer details on the stats and they seem to have been most occupied with ensuring the front line is in the best shape it can be at the detriment to other areas.

I have suggested before, that the front line was the catalyst for everything Klopp set in motion. Coutinho - Firmino - Mané - Salah. The Fab 4..

That was when people started to take notice. Ok we had a shyte back line and joke keepers BUT that devastating threat was there. Possibly this is the thinking. To get that back.

    not easy

Even then, it's still not loose change, especially for a player who could be signed for nothing a year later.
