Liverpool have appointed Jorg Schmadtke as their new sporting director.

The 59-year-old German replaces Julian Ward, who leaves this summer after only a year in the role.

Liverpool were keen to have Schmadtke in place for the opening of the summer transfer window next month, although work on potential signings is already underway.

Schmadtke, who previously held similar roles with Hanover, Koln and Wolfsburg, joins Liverpool on a short-term deal, with the potential for a long-term contract.
