Thanx for making this a sticky...Gary...well done.
I'll add this;
For some of the newbies who may not be aware..
On the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster there has always been a service at Anfield. Very moving tribute to those lost that tragic day.
The team and manager have always attended along with many executives of LFC.
With a match on the same day, the team and manager can't make the service.
This is about respect for all those famiies and friends who lost loved ones.
There has been a --for lack of better word--- tradition... of showing respect that day.
Bradford FC suffered a major fire and lost lives, and have refused to play on that date in the future. They have lived up to that ever since.
Many long time supporters have always attended the service..how can they go to a match the same day with the same enthusiasm after being at Anfield to pay respects?
The match was moved to 5:15pm kickoff, as it had been scheduled to be at 3pm..the same time as the service.
But there will be many who just can't do both. After going to Anfield to pay respects for friends and loved ones lost and then be expected to rush their travel to an away match.
That is the problem this year..unless the match is moved.
And it is something that many do not want repeated in the future.
I hope this perspective helps..
