It all depends what Atalanta turns up. They haven't been great recently and drew 0-0 for the first time in absolute ages against a relegation candidate in their last league game.

Nearly a goal there from Neco getting robbed wanting far too long to do things, I really do NOT rate the lad, takes far too long and too many touches that he doesn't need to and tries stupid things in dangerous areas and when he receives it in great forward areas to put a first time cross in, he even fannies about then

Peak-Atalanta are a joy to watch, just as Klopp's Dortmund were. Inconsistent this season though.

If they bring their best, it's good experience for the younger lads. If they don't bring their best, our younger lads can cope and will gain confidence.

Hopefully we have juuuust enough. I would have rather Jürgen went with a stronger side so we can rotate later, but if we win with heavy rotation and can still do the aforementioned rotation then that is even better!

We're woefully getting outmatched here.
Outworked, out-hassled and plainly beaten to every second ball by Atalanta.

Even when we do (re-)gain possession and look like we could do something, someone inevitably gives it away cheaply.

Klopp looks frustrated on the sidelines and I can't blame him.

He needs to make some changes at the half.

That is one of our midfield's biggest weaknesses. They simply do not provide enough creativity and goals, and on occasion can struggle to retain possession.

We were bound to be poor to be fair, Jurgen hasn't fielded this selection for fun, the injuries and amount of games have forced him to, he's probably hoping Mane or Mo can nick one and we can give nothing away and he can bring on Jota, Bobby, Robbo and Fabinho in the last 20 and win it

It's like when he made the formation changes, we're so used to and reliant on continuity of system and selection that even with continuity of system just a couple of key players missing we're well below our best

HT really REALLY poor half, dire in fact, over to Jurgen as ever to work his half time magic and make sure we're a fuck site bettter in the second half, some subs would be a good idea, Origi just doesn't look at all interested, I'd bring the young midfielder on for Neco and move Millie to RB, he created more from there v Leicester in 10 minutes than he's managed to create in midfield tonight

Don't want to criticise young Neco, but he is simply not ready yet.
Apart from Milner and fab, who else can play at right back.?
Actually i thought Joe Gomez was pretty good at right back, but we never persevered with him there because he was never going to get in ahead of Trent.
Divock looks like he has won all he wants at this club and is just treading water now til something else comes along. he is not that old is he ?
Would a nil nil see us top the group?

Well that reminded me of one of our away games in the group stages from previous seasons. Utter gash.

And I really don’t know who told Jurgen Neco Williams was anywhere near ready to play in the first team but they were having a laugh.

Rhys looks ok, Tsimikas is fitting in ok considering he’s not played for so long or much at all in a red shirt.
You often see this when the manager signals where the game is in his thinking by resting and rotating, it takes the edge off those who start.

To be fair we will be playing him a different way.

You only need to look at Wijnaldum's goal-scoring record with us compared to that of Holland - 11 in 16 or something for Holland, which isn't far off the 10 in 13 Salah has with us this season, yet hardly gets a goal for us due to his different role.

To be fair to Klopp, you can't really blame him for having had one eye on the Brighton game and trying to manage his available resources accordingly.
It's just that what we have on the shelf in terms of our squad depth is really lacking.

I would argue the Brighton game is more important to win than this one, as we've virtually already qualified for the last 16 (with a point that we surely should be able to pick up in one of our last two games) in the CL.
In the league, considering the congested period coming up, we need to pick up maximum points wherever we can and the Brighton game would qualify as such (especially with a big Spuds game coming up not long after that).

I reckon Klopp probably saw it the same way.

No idea why it was necessary to start Origi tbh, Bobby and Jota have both had more rest than Mane or Mo and he started both

Origi is now a waste of a selection. He just does not want to know. Needs to be shipped out.

So why starts Mane and Mo and leave out both Jota and Bobby when they've played less than Mane and Mo?

At the end of the say I said at the time I have no idea why he signed a new deal last summer. He knew he wasnt going to get as many games as he wanted and he could have got a big club deal elsewhere last summer whilst his stock was at its highest. It's very surprising FSG didnt cash in on him.

That simply isn’t true at all. Certainly won’t look like that if you are Divock.

He stood up every time we needed him - stood up and delivered often when getting a few minutes here and there. He was never given a run of games. I can understand why he isn’t motivated in a red shirt now. No matter what he does. He is on the bench next game.

Christ Bobby can be the worst player on the pitch - game after game but he is given time. Origi was never given that.

Mané's been terrible for a while now and far below his usual standards (not just this game)

The complaint was usually that Salah is too selfish and he wastes a lot of the chances he could have passed to Mané in particular, and yet he's started the last game and played a good portion of this one without Salah on the field and all he's shown is that perhaps Mo is right to try to take those shots himself rather than pass.

Not one shot on target, absolutely zero switches, you suspected our midfield actually having a good performance in Captain fantastic Hendo's absence was likely a one off freak occurrence

On Jurgen tonight, too many changes, Neco simply shouldn't be anywhere near a Liverpool first 11, if he was starting Mane and Mo then absolutely no reason not to start either Bobby or Jota with them, midfield was shite, created absolutely fuck all, no switches to release Tsimikas or Mane, just an incredibly poor, inept performance

I completely understand resting Robbo, with Keita injured not much else he could have done with midfield, could have played Minamino at RCM or given the young lad a game with Milner at RB which surely would have been better than starting Neco, what I really don't get was leaving out both Jota and Bobby and playing Origi

I really don't think Neco should be anywhere near any Liverpool 11, Jurgen likes players to be brave with the ball, he urgently needs to explain the difference between brave and foolhardy to Neco

To be fair to him, he probably looks at the fact we had the subs basically ready in the 58th/59th while it was 0-0.

If we get them on and it's still level, we maybe win the game 1-0 and can relax. It wasn't to be.

Not to say we can't begrudge how the night panned out mind. Hopefully Brighton and Ajax can be success stories in terms of both the results and a lack of further injury woes. Don't really want to have to go to the last match for qualification and certainly don't want the Europa League this season.

It's just a momentary lapse of reason. Understandable considering our injuries but I feel it was a bit arrogant to think that line up could win the game in the CL. You can rarely get away with it.

I can understand the frustration with last night's lineup and result and most certainly the performance from most of the players. But, let's look at things from Klopp's point of view. The room for error at the top of the PL is tiny.
The room for error in the group stages of the CL is more open. You can lose 3 games and still easily qualify, as we have seen many times.
BT's scheduled Saturday lunchtime kick off got a reaction from Klopp and it didn't work out as we hoped it would. Let's move on and hopefully get the result we need against Ajax and put the thing to bed.
