Everton only need to win 1 of their 2 games in hand to overtake us temporarily.
Villa need to win both of their games in hand to overtake us.
Whilst spurs if they won their game in hand would go above us too.

Grim stuff

We desperately need to go on a run of 4 or 5 wins, not that it looks too likely right now but we do desperately need it.

There's no need to despair CCTV. We'll only need to fall to within a few points of the relegation zone and then I'm sure our owners will give Klopp a fiver to go out and refresh our squad.

It's easy to catastrophise right now. We may very well have a bad season, relatively speaking, particularly with our bad run of form.

City (1st) and Chelsea (10th) are separated by 12 points at the moment.

The gap between 1st and 10th WILL get wider at the season goes on, but it also a reminder that, for any side, including us, a winning run of even 4 matches or so could make you jump a few positions.

Will we be one of the sides to manage that this season? Who knows. Let's hope so!

Amazing to think chelsea had Matic, KDB, Hazard, Salah, Lukaku.......

what a team they could of had, they kinda helped players settle in a bit before getting rid!

when you think about it, they must be easily the most underperforming team in the league in recent history, with money spent not forgetting Robben and Ake

June 2020:
Courtesy of Transfermarkt, we’ve ranked the 20 current Premier League clubs by their net spend over the past five years.

1. Man City – £601.98m
2. Man Utd – £484.88m
3. Arsenal – £267.88m
4. Everton – £225.42m
5. Brighton – £214.86m
6. Wolves – £205.22m
7. West Ham – £187.49m
8. Bournemouth – £176.95m
9. Aston Villa – £166.65m
10. Watford – £125.69m
11. Leicester City – £124.83m
12. Newcastle – £122.91m
13. Chelsea – £115.57m
14. Liverpool – £107.58m
15. Tottenham – £106.62m
16. Crystal Palace – £75.69m
17. Burnley – £59.4m
18. Sheffield United – £56.71m
19. Southampton – £22.32m
20. Norwich City – £25.42m profit

Obviously this doesn't include all of this summers spending but very early to judge that at this time..

Not the worst record these last 5 - 6 years with just 8 million more spend than us

Chelsea since 2015

2x league title
1x Europa League
1x FA Cup
1x League Cup

Liverpool since 2015

1x League title
1x Champions League

well they did sell Hazard&costa and had a transfer ban hence the 200m spent in Summer

I always joked we may aswell of had that ban at the time... because we did fuck all

amazing how many players they sold/let go that turned out class though, I'd hate if i was a chelsea fan i'd be fuming seeing these players now....

Hazard is the only one they kept really!

Wonder if they'll get rid of havertz and werner quick if they don't improve (surely they will improve but still) and end up being class again like Salah and KDB and lukaku

I have Faith we will get there - the question will be when.

If there was a table based on xG (I know everyone isn't a fan of stats here and that is okay) we would be top - but we aren't quite being clinical enough right now, which means we aren't compensating for the issues at the back/subsequent midfield issues.

If we dig in and get a couple of results and Jota comes back in we might get somewhere closer to grinding out some matches, even if we aren't free-flowing.

I'm on the other side of the fence. I'm expecting us to continue to struggle, partly as a result of us not having the squad size to be able to continue to play a high intensity pressing game, and partly because we don't the quality (both elsewhere on the pitch and on the bench) to compensate for our front three not firing on all cylinders.

This is going to be made worse if/when more teams go above us in the league.

If true I wonder if clubs will put the block on players going, I hope they do.

Cant see that being right as the clubs would have no players to choose from !

I wouldn't say that one win means we're back on track.
Back to winning ways. I'll take any positive at the minute!!

Its a great result as I depise the fuckers.

Would be just absolutely brilliant if Arsenal managed something against them at the weekend - with the congestion in the upper half of the table it takes so little for them to be dragged down a couple of places into a battle to remain in the Champion's League spots - goes for anyone really that is remotely close to the top of the Table.

The highs and lows of a mad old season.
A win tomorrow night and we're back on track.

It's 11.30pm, Fernandes has just been told to come back on the field for a penalty

Ho ho ho ;)

One might also say Sheffield UTD have worked hard at what worked so well for them last season and reaped the rewards tonight

One might also say that the first time since early season Ole has rotated outside of his most trusted best 14-15 as we have had to all season he came unstuck

Games this calendar year..

Our best form this calendar year came when Jota was playing and after Virgil got his injury.

I know it flies in the face of the narrative but they are the cold hard facts.

Lol what have Sheffield United done differently ? Play the same setup but get 2 wins out of 3.

Who are these detrimental and irregular players you speak of that the mighty ole could not win with ?

@Steveo - what narrative? (I haven't been followint the thread tbh)

That a team is better without losing its most in-form player? :D Yes, it kills that one.

I don't think anyone with half a brain really thinks that VVD just coming back will solve all our problems. But equally noone with half a brain expects us to do worse with him either.

That the drop in form has been almost exclusively down to injuries. Results point to something else happening.

19 also seems to be suggesting that playing the same group of 14 players is the key to every teams success.. I am suggesting that IF you do that ( while almost impossible in the real world ) the chances of a crash and drop in form are extremely high.

Then I'm not sure I agree tbh. As you said - our best form was before Jota got injured. That was a huge contributing factor to the drop in results imo.

Steveo

Yes but much of that period was without Virgil and Gomez and with Fab at the back - so a very different setup to that which had gone before.

EDIT:for clarity - The form started to slide last from last January not specifically this autumn.

Yes, agree on both. It's a combination of multiple factors. The injuries aren't helping. Could be that the other factors are already gone but the injuries are just so many that we can't see the improvement. Could be... but I doubt it.

We are suffering with a number of things.

1.bad form
2.injuries
3.poor officials
4.short turn around season affects big clubs more due to playing in Europe/int players.
5.no fans is 100% having an impact take is out of it for a minute does anyone really think this table looks the same with fans ?

I think when fans are back and players have had a proper pre season then we will be strong again, I am aware City will be too.

I know theres a long way to go and we can easily get back in the title race with a decent run of result. But right now personally i cant even be bothered to cheer when teams around us drop points.I just feel right now.The team isnt in a position to challenge. with how we have been playing.

Won't speak on Virgil's injury, or our form, but I certainly think Jota being available is an enormous boost when it comes.

So far as I see it, just stay within a reasonable distance of those at the upper end of the table and see what happens.

We may not win the Title this year, but if we can be within a relatively small points gap of say, 2nd or 3rd by the time Jota comes back, we can certainly finish Top Four, perhaps comfortably if all goes well - and hopefully supplement it with a deep run in Europe.

If finishing (let's say) 3rd combined with a Champion League quarter or semi-final becomes the standard for a "bad" season for us, we're in a good place.

The hardest bit of the season to come as far as I can see it will be the shaking free of the current malaise, prior to the return of a couple more - Jota and Keita say. From there we should improve a bit and if "the rest" can't get a big gap over an injury-ravaged, VAR-burned Liverpool, they'll have real difficulty against us in times to come.

I know what you mean. I was at work lasnite and one of my workmates was buzzing Utd got beat and he said " you don't even seem that happy".
I just said I'm more preoccupied with how poor we are playing.
Don't fancy us to win tonight but I wouldn't "take a point" either as we simply need to win that much.

3 Echo reporters gone for more or less the same team
Alisson Alexander-Arnold Matip Fabinho Robertson Henderson Thiago Salah Firmino Mane. They've each chose someone different on the left side of midfield. Wijnaldum Jones Shaqiri. We'll know soon enough.

Minor muscle injury.

Hopefully a short reprieve.

Had high hopes if he and Matip could have partnered each other at centre-back but the challenge is a little bigger now.

Still, no excuses.

That’s what happens when you play a midfielder at CB - different muscle use from different repetitive movement. It is EDIT: no wonder Hendo keeps getting strains too. So we lose him AND Fab in midfield...

It’s a joke that we can’t bring in a CB .

I would take a draw without question.
