Good game so far but we conceded far too easily.

Very slack from Naby to let Lemar breeze past him as he did, then to leave Lemar when he played the ball and for Matip to step back instead of forward to hold the line, but they were all slight errors aside from Keita's original slackness and Atletico worked it very well to be fair

Poor 2 or 3 minutes with the ball prior to the goal. Firmino thrice and all the others gave it away or missplaced or made a close pass where a team mate had to strecth for it. That roused the opponenent and their crowd.

Yep. It’s an annoying feature to our players, collectively which I don’t get.

I mean we humbled Norwich, came undone at Brentford when we dropped the intensity. Humbled Porto, got served a lesson first half against city, took the lead twice, and still dropped off. Same with Watford and now today.

Proper test. I said on the weekend Atleti and United will be a barometer of where we will be in May in terms of winning stuff. Watford were atrocious.

We have 5 clean sheets in the league but i think 4 of those we were lucky. We are not managing games looking after the ball, making tactical fouls etc.

At 2-0 u let the oppo have the ball deep in their half you reset and wait to hirt them on counter. But we are like a basketball team. We have to attack every 24 seconds

Very good contest this one, very good tactical battle too, thought both the goals we conceded were soft, Keita most culpable for the first, Virgil absolutely sleeping for the second, Atletico are playing 532 letting us have it, then springing quickly to 352 with the extra width in midfield easily outnumbering our 3 in there, so we need to make adjustments maybe one of the FB stay one goes, one of the wide forwards not as advanced the other side, needs to be some adjustment so we can have 5 in midfield as quickly as Atletico are springing it

Over the Jurgen to work his HT magic, address that issue, make sure we're much better second half, administer a bumming, get the win and another absolutely vital 3 points

Sorry but Keita cannot disguise how poor he is with the occasional spectacular goal. He’s nowhere near good enough. The midfield and defence has been terrible, they should all offer Alisson their week’s wages, he’s the only thing stopping us from conceding 4 goals in 20 minutes.

Maybe its for the best that this game is tougher than we thought and not the routine walk in the park some might have imagined.

That Watford game did us no favours.
They were so shambolic that not only did it hide our still persistent flaws, it also got some players to get into their heads that this is how games were going to be moving forward.

Better to be brought crashing back down to Earth before we play the Mancs who will no doubt be looking to turn their own mess around and give Ole his security blanket win.

It very well might, because we're getting outnumbered in midfield so easily when Atletico spring because we reverted to the 4312, so with Mane and Mo both narrow most often when we lose possession, both their full backs break with no player tracking them or going with them, needs tweaking, one full back keeping further forward and the opposite forward staying wide would be a useful adjustment

FT 3-2 Up the bum job done. a comprehensive bumming administered, Alisson MOTM, not our best display by any stretch of the imagination, we can pick fault with some of what the players did or didn't do at times, some of it was sloppy, or too casual, but honestly, I think Simeone got the better of Jurgen with his tactics for the majority of that game

They constantly got 5v3 against our midfield following one of our attacks breaking down and Jurgen never got a handle on it or managed to stop it and it was happening because Mane and Salah were both central when most of our attacks broke down, so when their wing backs quickly pushed forwards, no-one was going with them, and there was good variation of movement from their wingbacks in that too, they weren't constantly looking to spring down the line, sometimes it was central with one of their midfielders assuming the wide position to be there quicker - That and the 2 games in 19-20 are definitely ones Jurgen and his staff need to suffer studying, as tactics wise, Simeone has done him the last 3 meetings

As ever, all the focus on the next game, administering a bumming, getting the win and another absolutely vital 3 points

The high foot was, but I think Sadio's foul on Ederson was when he was on his own with the keeper going for the ball. Both harsh if you ask me. Had they had 11 men, we might not be coming away with all three points. As CD says, lucky to have Allison in our ranks

Well, against a full side you might have a team penned in, someone is usually positioned for an outball, versus a situation where everyone is committing to giving an extra 10% each and giving everything to defensive actions rather than letting their minds drift to the counter.

I think it's relatively normal to struggle to break a side down in those circumstances, though certain sides that are used to monopolising possession and having super technical players often find a way. Our..."DNA"....if you will is still geared towards counters and counter-press situations creating opportunities, whereas I'd generally fancy a side like Pep's City to "pick a lock" more than us.

Plenty of work for the video analysis team and Jurgen to do for that to happen, Simeone's done Jurgen tactically the last 3 meetings, other sides try to copy it, but they don't have players of as high a quality as Atletico and as organised at playing to the tactics Simeone employs and unfortunately, the strengths of the tactics and tweaks of tactics Simeone likes to employ are the best to use against our strengths, but you have to be as practices at them with as much quality in your side to pull them off, you can't just try playing that way as a one off v us, you've got to be really fucking good at and practiced at it

Virgil had a poor game by his standards, he got caught stepping up to allow Greizzman to run in behind from in his own half from a ball played from deep - Absolutely FUCK ALL to do with our midfield

After Kieta's ipoor attempt at a tackle diving in on our right, that situations was under control, Matip was exactly where he needed to be, Hendo was where he needed to be, Virgil's job, with 2 defenders, Virgil and Robbo v one attacker, was to pick up Greizzman, there was only one possible ball on, making it easy to read, Virgil went to sleep completely, again that goal was all about Virgil's own poor game and lapse, and again FUCK all to do with midfield, well under control even after Kieta's inaction

Only you can blame the midfield for those 2 errors/lapses by Virgil when both were Virgil's serious lapses or errors that led to Big Bear having to make a great save and Greizzman scoring and unquestionably Virgil's responsibility

Yep only issue with it is - whoever steps in at that level, is most likely going to cost us. We are playing with a back 5 in effect. That’s because we have no midfield.

I think it's a few issues stacking up, not unlike when multiple injuries last season caused real damage to the cohesion and chemistry of the side, which we are quite reliant on - Klopp loves to pick as much of the same XI as he can.

In midfield tonight we have a great player who is probably getting a fraction too much game time given his age/lack of pace in Milner, with Henderson a good bit below his best right now and an attack-minded Keita far from being excellent when people drive at him with the ball.

So there's a lot to deal with, but that gets compounded by a couple of misunderstandings between Matip and Van Dijk with the offside trap, PLUS Van Dijk still working his way back towards his best, which he can certainly be forgiven for.

So that's effectively 5 different "problems" we have simultaneously. The main thing for me is to sort one of them out, then hopefully another and another. As long as we aren't carrying multiple problems simultaneously for a prolonged period, I wouldn't be (too) stressed, though we should of course be conscious of it.

A shame we couldn't have played a bit more keep-ball at 2-0 up and got to half-time. Should also cut ourselves a touch of slack and concede that João Felix and Griezmann aren't easy adversaries and that we were away from Home.

7 away matches in a row now where we have scored 3 or more. It disguises a few flaws for sure, but we're a pretty damn good side. Hopefully Jones and/or Thiago back soon to help freshen up the midfield.

Quite right Sid - and I am being very picky. I am being greedy.

It's fan Nature. If we won the League by winning every match 2-0 and went into the next season winning 10 matches in a row 2-0, part of us would be grumbling going into the 11th game that we hadn't won 3-0 in ages.

Or "Salah doesn't score enough headers". Or "how come none of our stars can beat Millie on the lactic acid test?"

If anyone can iron out the "critical non-essentials" that we didn't quite get right, it's our Manager. He'll always do frustrating things like generally not rotating as much as I'd like or making subs later than "Rafa time" (62nd-67th minute) but he's as close to a perfect Manager as we'll ever get, so just enjoy it.

If (when he is done with us) he needs a year away from Football but still has love for us, I'd honestly hope we tried to offer him a year's paid leave on the condition that he is coming straight back to us on a good length deal with Lijnders or whoever covering for a season, rather than see him manage Bayern Munich or whoever. Thankfully not a problem for right now.

Excusing him for what, his passing has been below the levels he set, he has been keeping it moving pretty well and changing the direction of our play pretty well, as he's our most effective passer, him being below his best in that respect isn't helpful I'll admit.

I do not see him having been below par in his positioning in the press, in his recognising of where the danger is and who he needs to pick up and in always scanning and picking up runners from deep, he has been below his standards with the ball, accepted, but not without the ball. No player is without fault and believe me if Hendo was charging into situations 2 of our other players were already on top of leaving a runner, or his player and an area wide open and actually creating an easy outball and option for the player our 2 others had otherwise boxed in with a good press, I'd call him out for it immediately, but he isn't doing that, he's doing the side of the game without the ball, reading it, positionally and decision making as well as he ever did, he is perhaps a little slower than he was 2 seasons ago, but that's age

I get all that and am just saying what is also plain to see despite the super fan - don’t mention the war BS some want to dictate.

We are struggling in the middle of the park. Virgil was a mess tonight with no cover. Allison bailed us plenty tonight . or did I imagine it? Can’t it be said because we won?

Play a Watford or a Porto and it ain’t a problem but anyone decent and we look short. That should have been something the club knew about in August.

Its not about being a super fan I have eyes as well we have been open all season.

I dont know why that is its possibly tactical to get an extra player forward....last season people moaned we couldnt score or create this season that isnt a problem.

You mentioned we were top at xmas which is true after a good start but we also lost our 3 CBs as well and nobody in this league recovers from that.

Van Djik was poor tonight I wouldnt have played him but im not Klopp so I cant make that choice.

I agree we could have done with another CM in the summer again not anything any of us can do about it.

As things stand we are doing well but that means nothing in October.

Absolutely cock on!

It's almost as if last season's missing defenders had nothing to do with the struggles we had... There were a lot of fans that were worried that we were totally burnt out and that this season would follow the same as last. Whilst not firing on all cylinders yet, we look hungry, full of energy and look like scoring goals again.

This team is phenomenal. And i'm not sure it gets the recognition it truely deserves.

Last lost a Premier League game on the 7th of March.

Have won 3/3 in Europe this season.

5/8 in the League this season, drawing the other 3. Much as I don't like to clutch at ifs/buts/maybes too much, we were also a missed sitter away from being 4-2 up against Brentford and City's equaliser took a deflection, so we have surrendered points rather than failing to be in a position to get them by being too far behind in losing positions.

This is, as often seems the case, with us seeing lots of room for little bits of improvement. If we sort out an issue or two then we're in a seriously strong spot. Not that we aren't already.

I think the unrelenting consistency of City winning so much muddies the waters - and I think(?) we still have (just about) more points than them (total) over the last 3 seasons, which is wild.

This team has some phenomenal players and has achieved phenomenal results - However , judging by our games against top quality opposition, this season and last - even Brentford levels - we are not phenomenal just yet.

Let’s not forget the drubbing we got without any missing CB’s last term at Villa. Always good to keep a balance on things.

Salah and Alisson are playing out of this world and it gets you big wins over mortal teams but against the best it looks a tall order.

3 of those Villa goals came from wicked deflections which players can do very little about. Also how many times does a team concede so many deflections in one game?. It was a freak result which all teams suffer once in a while. I was more concerned with the 3 we conceded at Brentford this season and the two last night.

I would love to see a WDL results sequence for our games since we got beat 4-1 at Spurs back in 2017. Almost 4 years to the day! That game was the turning point. Since then we've been a machine.

Even last season we started like a machine and ended like one. Only the middle part of the season was a mess due to having zero defenders.

It's not luck. And you cant do this sort of thing having poor players. You cant do this with a few Suarezesque players carrying the rest for 4 years.

I'll counter that and say when we got hammered 7-2 in that week United lost 6-1 at home to Spurs and City lost 5-2 at home to Leicester.

Covid had a huge impact on teams especially ones whose players play all year and City got off to a slow start by their standards too.

You are right in those two are the stand outs this season and we are a very good team but every team has room to improve as well.

For shits and giggles I had a quick look

Since losing 4-1 at Spurs in October 2017 we have lost (League and CL) -

2017/18 - 5 games for the remainder of that season (2 of which were a European Cup semi and Final)
2018/19 - 5 games total. Only 1 in the league!
2019/20 - 6 games total. Only 2 games in the league!
2020/21 - 11 games total. Which is a lot less than I thought it would be
2021/22 - 0 games.

So in exactly 4 years we have lost a grand total of 27 league and CL games. 15 league games in 4 years. We lost 14 games in the league in Owl's season in 2010/11.

Just think what it would have been with a few fit defenders last season...
