Houllier's best signing was Sami Hyypia, most of his others were terrible, especially the french ones. How could he get it wrong so many times when he was a big noise within the french fa and knew all the players. Wenger on the other hand was bringing over Henry Wiltord Petit and Vieira. You wouldn't think they came from the same country.

On top of that, there are 2 more big problems about his transfer
1) Couldn't get his player due to LFC were not convincing that time. P.Evra moved to Man U immediately after he had offered.
2) Couldn't get his player plat at their best, For example great player like Litmanen, skillful talented player, couldn't handle his long ball, run Owen run tactics.

At that time Liverpool were not an attractive destination for top players and those three that Wenger signed in 97 was just pure luck they turned out as good as they did. We were in a situation much similar to where Utd are now. Desperate and being had over for average players.
I half agree that some of GHs signings weren't great, especially the ones that cost a lot at the time but in terms of what he did for the club and how he turned it around hes very underappreciated.
If he had inherited the 96 squad the likes of Ruddock, Babb and Scakes would have been sent packing. If there was one thing he was good at it was making us tough to beat.

On trophies you could say Houllier did ok, but how lucky were we in 2001. A golden own goal to win UEFA cup, a 2nd division team takes us to penalties in the league cup, and got battered for 80 minutes in the "Owen" cup final. He did give Gerrard his debut, but whoever was manager at that time would have done the same. No-one was stopping him from becoming the player he did.

Evans was ready to pick Jason McAteer for what turned out to be his last game as joint manager. Houllier overruled him and picked Berger instead. Evans knew then it wasn't working between them so resigned. McAteer told that story when interviewed on LFC TV a few years back.

I went to see Fowler doing his talk with Mcateer. And he loved Roy Evans as manager and one story stood out. Last game in pre season was always Norway and it was tradition the lads all hit a certain nightclub. But Houllier got wind of it and said on the bus back to the hotel any one thinking of going out after the game will be fined a weeks wages.
The players said fuck him who does he think he is,so all got dressed and headed down to the lobby as planned and there was Houllier waiting on them. He waited until all had come down then read them the riot act. Just as they were about to go back to their rooms the hotel lift pinged ,the doors opened and there was Roy Evans standing suited and booked ready for the night out !!
And says "right lads let's go "
Houllier was fucking raging as everyone burst out laughing 😆 😂
