I'm not at all against keeping him.

I am very prone to weighing things up though. I think of value a lot - and "value" doesn't always mean raw numbers.

Take rumoured sales. Currently we are linked with selling the likes of -

Phillips - who is likely 5th choice in his position.
    N. Williams - a young player who is "fine" but not much better and will get very little time if Trent bounces back
    Origi - 5th or 6th choice attacker.

Now, that's 3 players (not the only ones linked with departures, but we'll focus on them) that probably don't have massive futures with us, if we're honest. If I thought we could "trade" these 3 players for a quality midfield option or quality forward option, I would be all over that.

In midfield Milner is getting on, Wijnaldum has departed, Henderson picks up injuries, Ox and Keita are injured a lot. The "value" of a quality midfield option is therefore higher (to me, personally, by all means disagree) than a likeable but limited centre-back, a youth full-back and an attacker low down the pecking order.

Equally in attack, Firmino's output is a bit off and we have 3 players (Shaqiri, Origi, Minamino) who don't look massively reliable for goalscoring output long-term. I would "value" bringing in a decent option as a trade-off if we can find someone suitable.

Ideally a slightly smaller squad of increasingly available players for me. This frees up wages a touch, which is useful for topping up the contracts of stars and for paying new acquisitions. Some may see the picture differently and that is fine.

    Just a reminder.....
In a squad of 25 we are allowed 17 non-nationals. The remaining 8 need to be English nationals or 'home-grown'. We do not need to have any English nationals or 'home-grown' but that would limit our squad to 17 which is not enough to compete for PL or CL.
Not having sufficient strength in that category will severely impact on any title challenges.
    Who are/will be that 8?

    Henderson
    Jones
    Trent
    Millner
    Gomez
    Oxlade

Can only think of 6 Elliot may be part of the squad that will make it 7. If we keep Nat Phillips that will be 8.
But these 2 I can see Elliot going back on Loan and Phillips being sold.

This is guesstimation, so don't read too deeply into it -

    1. Goalkeeping academy graduate gets promoted to be back-up to Adrian
    2. Joe Gomez
    3. Ben Davies
    4. Trent
    5. Milner
    6. Ox
    7. Henderson
    8. Elliott

Might be "out" on a couple of those, but I think that will be (roughly) right. Conor Bradley also got an international debut with Northern Ireland and could be promoted as bit-part right-back cover (Milner and Gomez can cover there already) though I'm not sure if he counts as home-grown or not.

Kelleher and Grabara are homegrown too.

    Robertson.

Found this link to help explain the situation but it is 2 years old..

    From your list Justme
    Milner is getting on
Hendo is also and has injury concerns.
Gomez and Ox also have injury concerns.
I think we are getting more than a bit light in that category.
We don't really want to be putting people into that category just to make up squad numbers.

    Isn't Kelleher seeking a loan?

Robertson isn't homegrown - 90% sure on this - he played in Scotland and only had one year with Hull before turning 21 - welcome to being corrected of course.

Curtis Jones could probably be registered as an "official" home-grown player if we were stuck - doesn't need to be of course as he is so young, but I imagine we can explore that.
