I'm not at all against keeping him.
I am very prone to weighing things up though. I think of value a lot - and "value" doesn't always mean raw numbers.
Take rumoured sales. Currently we are linked with selling the likes of -
Phillips - who is likely 5th choice in his position.
N. Williams - a young player who is "fine" but not much better and will get very little time if Trent bounces back
Origi - 5th or 6th choice attacker.
Now, that's 3 players (not the only ones linked with departures, but we'll focus on them) that probably don't have massive futures with us, if we're honest. If I thought we could "trade" these 3 players for a quality midfield option or quality forward option, I would be all over that.
In midfield Milner is getting on, Wijnaldum has departed, Henderson picks up injuries, Ox and Keita are injured a lot. The "value" of a quality midfield option is therefore higher (to me, personally, by all means disagree) than a likeable but limited centre-back, a youth full-back and an attacker low down the pecking order.
Equally in attack, Firmino's output is a bit off and we have 3 players (Shaqiri, Origi, Minamino) who don't look massively reliable for goalscoring output long-term. I would "value" bringing in a decent option as a trade-off if we can find someone suitable.
Ideally a slightly smaller squad of increasingly available players for me. This frees up wages a touch, which is useful for topping up the contracts of stars and for paying new acquisitions. Some may see the picture differently and that is fine.
