Technically two CBs are enough to defend a title. Or rather two players playing in those positions. We gambled that an injury crisis like this wouldn't hit us. We lost. I guess the gamble was made more appealing by the COVID situation but that doesn't change the outcome.

Also please stop misrepresenting what I've said. I've said I'd have preferred a CB in the summer as I'm quite aware how injury prone Matip is. My point is that it was a gamble I can understand to a degree but would have nonetheless preferred not to make in the club's shoes. As usual, I don't think we particularly disagree.

Fabinho was clearly considered an option on account of us having Milner/Shaqiri/Ox/Wijnaldum/Henderson/Thiago/Minamino/Jones, eight OPTIONS for three positions (yes, some are more senior than others, adaptability is a good thing!)

I actually largely agree with that - I'd have taken an affordable centre-back in the Summer - but Fabinho has been the OPTION that we went with - much as almost all of us would have preferred a specialist to take Lovren's place.

That is however a somewhat separate thread of "discussion" (than that of the difference*) between the numbers two and four and people twisting words.

Gomez has missed entire seasons before - it can happen to anyone - we gambled on Virgil remaining fit despite playing almost every game since he arrived and went out against Everton in January 2018.
