This is a cop-out.
(blaming his drop in form on AFCON)
Mane was at the same AFCON (which he helped his country win), and his form didn't see the same precipitous drop when he returned.
Besides which, it ignores the fact that Mo's form had already began dropping from about a month and a half or two months PRIOR to AFCON.
He had a period in September and October and possibly early November when he was untouchable and was scoring everything he came in touch with and then it all dropped off a cliff.
Also saying there is 'NOBODY better than him in his position' is misleading because it's only true when he's on form.
He hasn't been on form in more than 5 or 6 months now.
(It wasn't "only 4 months ago". 4 months ago he was returning from AFCON by which point his form was already gone.)
So what is the point of such a comment?
When it's not even true.
Likewise, saying he's been "carrying them" or carrying the team is similarly a lie.
We coped well enough with both his and Mane's absence at the AFCON - a vital pivotal period during which we closed City's 14 point gap to down to 3 or 2, and a period during which it was probably Jota more than anyone that was carrying the team. Certainly the scoring load.
And while it's true that in his top form in early season he did provide the bulk of the goals that enabled us to keep within touching distance of City to be able to mount the challenge at the end (he wouldn't be the golden boot winner if not for that period), it's also true that a good percentage of his goals came from dead ball situations like penalties.
I wish we were talking about the Mo Salah that scored a hat-trick at Old Trafford, because if we were, we would probably be sat here as Premier League and Champions League winners.
But fact of the matter is we're not.
He's form (or rather its drop-off) is the primary reason for that.
