And, whilst United and Arsenal did spend a lot of money, it still had to be balanced to some extent. City and Chelsea spend it with impunity.
They did have much more quality in depth than everyone else though hence their dominance of the era. Liverpool had some excellent 11s around that time under Ged that maybe just lacked a little sparkle that the other 2 had.
Arsenal were one signing ( Henry) from only having 2 titles in that era instead of 4 and could have sunk or been runners up constantly. He was a game changer for them and kept them competitive, without him Utd would have pissed the lot without a challenge.

Probably true, however Arsenal were no more dependent on Henry than we are on Salah for instance. He was the focal point for goals in that setup but the others were so integral to making that work.

For the invincible season they had a rear guard containing Sol Cambell - Ashley Cole - Clichy - Lauren - Toure & Keown. A midfield including Fabregas - Viera - Pires - Silva - Edu and Ljungberg plus a front line containing Henry - Bergkamp - Kanu & Wilford!

    They had a superb squad.

The question could be asked - as to whether we win a single title without any one of our 3 key players?

Definitely true that, I guess every great team has that one player who's the fulcrum of it all.
Well, we have 3. Lose one and its severely hampered.

It's why I hate this bloody derby coming up. We know them, what they will try to do.

I'm hoping, with Rafa in charge, they might actually try to play football instead of just clogging us.

United were winning titles with the likes of Phil Neville, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Darren Gibson, David Bellion, Van De Gouw, Massimo Taibi et al...

Where their strength was, was having 4 top forwards.

They were streets ahead of everyone, but their squad wasnt anywhre near as strong as Chelsea's current squad.

Think that was proved last season. VVD more so than any other. Obviously have 0 centre halves fro long periods of the season also plays a part

Think we'd make a reasonable challenge losing one of the front three. Of course, if you take 3 or 4 key players out of the side and we'd struggle (again last season). United and Arsenal would also have suffered similarly losing 4 first teamers. Take Campbell and Keown out of the Arsenal side and hey're lining up with Igor Stepanovs and Pascal Cygan...

City and Chelsea can cope with those sorts of losses.

Arsenal also had Toure and Lauren. They had much better cover at CB than we had last season. Last season highlighted the issue. Matip cannot be counted as a genuine option because he is so often unavailable, ditto Gomez.

Let’s hope this season doesn’t follow a similar pattern.

Keita - Oxlade and Milner. Will they manage over 30 games between them?
