Equally we could sink £40m-£60m on a Premier League player and it doesn't work out in the long-term. I'd rather go the relatively inexpensive/low risk route where possible with a view to then having money to spend on the absolute top priority targets.

If getting Kessie "for free" (obviously isn't, wages and agents and all that) permits us to get a really good striker in the Summer, or a really good midfielder like Bellingham, I'd definitely take it.

Milner and Ox out (age for one, injury-prone for the other) for Bellingham and Kessie in (as an example) would be great - Bellingham is young and talented, Kessie very resilient based on his appearances and also "only" 25 - it's a net improvement on that area of the pitch that helps with succession planning.

Where this ideology can wobble a bit (and it's where I do wish FSG would spend a bit more/take one or two slight risks) is if you continue to do the cheap signing, but never supplement it with the necessary "next step" sort of signing - they don't always have to be massively expensive, but in the past few seasons it's really been Thiago, Jota and Konate and if we even had ONE more signing under our belts of that calibre by now (either an upgrade on Origi/Minamino, or a midfielder if we shifted one or 2 of the EIGHT we have) then fan nerves would be eased and the squad would be that little touch better.
I agree signing players is always a risk no matter the league they play in.

A few things concern me with Kessie he is slow on the ball and this isnt his fault but how strong is Serie A ?

We went to the San Siro with a fringe team and played Milan off the park a game they needed to win whilst a defeat didnt matter much to us.

Id rather pay £40m on JWP than sign him on a "free" its never free in reality though !

I know he's getting on a bit but english and proven at a good level..

12m for trippier is a steal.

Everton making a few interesting moves, you feel rafa doesn't like the fullbacks with his new signigns haha.

In terms of "skimming off the top" you want to look at Man United - think the Glazers are distributing £11m to shareholders in the coming days.

They'll be due to get the Norwich scarves out again.

Lucas Digne: Newcastle offer Everton £22.5m plus Sean Longstaff for France left-back

Guessing that means they might get Ramsey too?

They might be ok if they get a new midfielder and CB + trippier and Digne
