Conventional thinking is that defenders tend to be better penalty takers than attacking players because they don't overthink it and are more reaction shooters.
And that attackers and forward players get too much into their own heads and overthink it instead of just shooting it.

But our best, or at least most consistent penalty takers in the past couple of decades have been midfielders (Milly, Gerrard, Kuyt...)

    Joel Matip.
    Box-to-box midfielder........er.... I mean, defender.

Puts a new spin on the phrase "box-to-box".
Now if we could just train him on what to do when he gets to the other box, he'd be the perfect pivot man.

Basing on their sheer ability to ping great passes. Hoping they can pass in neatly into the next.

Mane then makes a mess of it. Fucking hell lad

Ideally the best penalties are actually just passes to the spot you want to place it and not shots with power, unlike conventional thinking.
That might be why midfielders make great penalty takers.

    At least that's Milly's technique.
He picks his spot and basically just passes it there - often times with a bit vigour but normally not necessary if it's far enough.
