Great decision by lad.. Spanish international. won the Euros earlier in the summer.. plays at team that will never get into the champions league and only gets 53 thousand a week (i know only that). could have joined a team thats in the top 5 in the entire world.. (current rankings that is) it has Man-city in there. but they got their wealth from money laundering

Any top side that has a plan of getting a keeper to replace someone on their books would be very wise to be looking at him and I certainly won't be getting excited about it until we see him in a promo shot signing a contract. He has every chance of being one of the World's best keepers in a couple of years.

We aren't the only club who would be wise to future-proof the GK position a bit. Ter Stegen at Barca must be 31 or so by now (hardly decrepit, but you plan ahead) and lads like Neuer or Courtois (spelling?) will need replaced eventually.

It's exactly the type of proactive methodology we should have been employing for the 6 position, where we have thus far failed.
If reports are to believed we are haggling over 5mil. If we truly believe this guy is the successor to Alisson we should be paying the 5mil and get it done. Instead looks like we are stalling again.

Easy for us to say as fans. I too would instinctively be of the "just pay the extra £5m and get it done" thinking, but we seem to be pretty dogmatic about not paying above or selling below perceived value.

I think avoiding over-pays and under-selling is a good precedent and stops you becoming what Man United have - though I do wish we would be a little more flexible from time to time. Very much of a "tweak the model" rather than "shred the model" mindset.

Valencia need the money and presumably Hughes et al feel they have "spotted an opportunity" and it will be a case of who-blinks-first. I very much hope we don't cock it up.

And if Gomez goes this window we will have recouped £75-80m in player sales.

    Absolute jokers.

Sid, in the post I quoted, you said this would be "excellent business". If we paid the extra 5mil would that point of view change?

Yes it's easy to say pay the extra 5mil.however in the grand scheme of transfers, 5mil is a relatively small sum. An extra 5mil is especially small if the player in question becomes your number 1 for the next 5 to 7 years. Remeber it cost us in the region of 70mil for Alisson. This is going to cost 40mil.

It isn't even a priority position right now. But if we truly believe this is alisson successor we should be closing it. Unless we have another 70 to 80mil for the next alisson.
