It'll be a shame if a new CB coming in holds back his development.
    Indeed - he needs games.

I do think we can warrant a new centre-back and still give him chances though.

Van Dijk shouldn't play almost every match next season if we want to prolong his career, Konate tends to pick up injuries, Gomez seems to be becoming a "defensive Milner" every-man who can fill in where required and Matip's probably not getting an extension.

We still have Van den Berg too on the books who should get a chance. Also the next Manager could very well prefer a back-three set-up which could change how we perceive our defensive needs.

Aye I think there's definitely an argument for bringing one in,I think we do need one when taking your points into consideration.
Next season you'd hope Virgil won't be playing FA and league cup games. There's more CL games to play too I think which is something to think about. Keep him for CL and Prem only.
If Amorim gets the job he may try and bring the young lad Ignacio with him.

He improved a lot second half aided by our tactical tweaks

Gomez is looking a very good option at LB & RB now I thought he was our second best player today

He needs so help with letting players run off him or run of the back of him or getting grades off the back of Virgil

Needs to scan more keep checking where his man is

He can’t just stand and watch a player in between him & Virgil when there’s a cross coming in from Virgil’s side, he has to get in a better position to be able to get across him & challenge for the header or do enough to put the player off

It’s appended 4 or 5 times the last couple of games

He was excellent with the ball & driving it forward today, can’t be having players he’s looking at thr back of in the penalty area having a free header

Can’t be having a player running off Virgil onto him then off the back of him as happened twice today

    Needs some help with that

Wow. He’s had some first season, particularly when you consider he’s been playing in the hardest league in the world.

Henderson cost us about 12 points in the first 3 months of last season.. Anyways if we go back over your posts. no doubt you have blamed Bajcetic for a goal and then others for other mistakes . rather than Quansah. from my recollection the biggest error he made was the back pass in the Man-u away fixture.. hes done outstandingly well this season, so much so hes a starter in games from now on in, rather than being 4 or 5 choices.

Look at the highlights v West Ham & Spurs, he’s a very exciting young prospect I’m not bashing him just saying he needs some help especially with picking up the players who have been making runs off the back of him too easily

Shouldn’t be letting Antonio or Johnson get free headers where they got them

Both move off Virgil onto Quansah, we’re in a space between Virgil & Quansah with the ball coming in from Virgil’s side, he was looking right at them & made no attempt to adjust his position to be able to challenge them if the ball can in

Same with Bowen’s goal he’s the one who should be challenging him, same with Richarlison, let him run off him way too easy from Spurs first goal, let him run off him again to almost make it 4-3 thr combination of Alisson & Gomez rescuing us

There are 2 areas he’s shown a persistent weakness he needs help with, that’s all

With Matip almost certainly departing we would be looking at -

    Van Dijk
    Konate
    Gomez (can play full-back)
    Quansah

I quite like the idea of having Van den Berg get chances (can play full-back though not in the "Trent" way) and us targeting one top young centre-back if we possibly could as well.

People will argue that six is too many (probably right to be fair) but if Gomez and Van den Berg were offering full-back cover too it would mean we were covered when Konate gets the inevitable injuries and Van Dijk could actually be rested/rotated to prolong his career.
