Assuming Southgate steps down? Who next?

It's an incredibly small pool of English managers. And I do think it should be an English manager (as it should for every other International side, it should be the best that nation can offer).

Eddie Howe is probably top of the list.

    Potter
    Dyche
    Carsley
    O'Neil
    Parker
    Lampard
    Rooney
    Gerrard
    Carrick
    Edwards
    Cooper

    Very, very slim pickings.

England were one of the worst attacking sides at Euro 2024, in terms of both shot quantity and quality.

Only five teams shot less often than England.
Only Scotland, Serbia and Slovenia had a worst attack in terms of expected goals.
Discounting penalties, only Scotland created worse-quality chances on average.

Says it all really, has to be management/tactics/never playing as a team..

That attack had incredible seasons for clubs.

Maybe someone with real character and quality for this excellent group of wonderful human beings, but, as I said, England just lacked that wee wee bit of luck in the final third and every individual will be fine if theirs isn't one of the names in these here 3 envelopes.

Kane should retire from the England set-up. Will he?
Scored loads of goals for Bayern.
But they didn't win any trophies.
    Crazy isn't it?
Is it burn-out, or just age?
Watkins, for me, should be the replacement.

Of course not - he'll do a Ronaldo and jeopardise his country's chances.

    Remember that "records" nonsense?

    Odd-ball he is.

Taking, playing and hanging your hopes on injured or semi-fit players never, ever works. See Rooney, See Beckham, See Shaw, See Kane...

You have to players properly getting beyond a deep lying forward with lots of pace and mobility. England had none of that. And that is entirely tactical.

England have some really exciting, direct pacey wingers in Eze and Gordon and they barely got a kick. Entirely tactical.

England have enough quality players to not have to watch them play turgid, slow, negative shit.

You can lump Southgate in with likes of Bruce, Hughes, Souness and Redknapp as managers that have absolutely nothing, they have no distinctive style or method of player. They just turn up at clubs and get sacked.

If you want to go down that defensive route then do it properly, get a Dyche or a Mourinho and use a proper big-man up front.

England's next manager needs to be someone who'll play on the front foot, otherwise we'll waste another exciting crop of players just as Sven, Capello, McLaren and Hodgson did.
The only problem with all of this is - How did he become Englands most successful manager then?

Could it be - and I am just asking the question here - could it be… perhaps - that the players so many Britons ‘believe’ to be top class - are in fact just decent players plying their trade in the Premier league - in squads that often boast far better quality players from over seas..?

How else do we explain the fact that last night was the first time IN football HISTORY that England have made a final in a major international tournament not hosted in England and more specifically Wembley stadium?

Quite a few of the Gooners I speak to say they believe HAD Xhaka stayed they would have won the league. Probably BS but that's a view from some that go every other week to the Emirates.

They were over the moon that they they bought so well season after season - especially last summer in adding Havertz which was massive for them - but that despite wanting him many feel they didn't really add anything with Rice in over losing Xhaka - despite his disciplinary record. Adding 5 points to their total from the year before including 1 they did not deserve v us at Anfield..

Now remember that and look at these 2 lineups from the City - Arsenal 0;0

Look how tiny the English contingent are in the 2 teams that finished 1st and 2nd.
