I have to imagine that any player that's coming to replace Trent isn't automatically going into the first 11 and the starting lineup.
The position should be up for grabs for whomever makes it there and provides most consitency between this person and Conor - with Conor getting first crack at being the starting RB, with the newcomer hopefully providing the necessary competition and push.
If they slack, they're out of the door.
A large part of the reason why Trent's performances went down a drain towards the end of his time here - particularly defensively - is because he became complacent and comfortable in the knowledge that the club didn't have any legitimate alternatives to him.
We had cover (Gomez, Milly, Quansah).
But none of them (as a result of not being natural fullbacks or rightbacks), were real 'competition' for Trent's spot in the same way that it could be argued that Tsimikas (a natural fullback) was for Robbo on the other flank.
And I think that played into the effort he felt he had to put to keep his position because he knew that even after his worst performance, he'd still stand a great chance of starting the next game and only injury would keep him out of the starting lineup.
At least until Conor came along, but that was already too late.
If Conor was here 3 or 4 years prior, I don't think we'd have seen Trent's form take the nosedive it did as he (Conor) would have kept him on his toes to keep that starting spot.
I don't want a repeat of that with his replacement(s).
It should also be a motivation to Conor to take personal responsibility to keep his fitness in check, as a decent replacement for Trent would mean that any long injury layoff from Conor will likely mean a tough fight for him getting his starting spot back.
Just give me a player who's hungry, smart and willing to graft and put the work in, and I don't care if he has a"Hollywood pass" in his locker or is a deadball specialist (we already have a few of those in the lineup already.

Of the three, Branthwaite would be an excellent signing and my first choice, but as you say, there's not a chance in hell we'll sign him.
I would then look at Guehi, to me he's like a fitter version of Joe Gomez but with maybe a liitle more confidence. And with his contract being up at the end of next season the opportunity to get him in on the cheap is there. He would also be a HG player.
Whilst it would be very similar to what we did with Soton a few years ago, I would seriously be looking at Palace's 'star' players. Add Wharton and Eze to deal...
Huijsen is an interesting one. Obviously the youngest of the 3 with a lot of potential, but he only has 30 odd senior appearences to his name. Dropping Ł50m on pure 'potential' is always risky.
Something, Something, Something, Dark Side
I think Huijsen is going to be seen as a generational player. A bit like Virgil.
He'll need to bulk up though, and/or finish growing.
Newcastle want to bring Liverpool and England centre-back Jarell Quansah, 22, to St James' Park this summer and hope a Ł30m will tempt the Premier League leaders to sell. (Times - subscription required)
Cleaning up the Scots since the 13th century
Watched Ping pong several times and he looks ok without being anything special.
Again, seems to focus more on attacking than defending
Bradley has a great future if he can stay fit
