Who to keep, who to relegate to squad player, who to move on and who to sign is a very subjective topic….
I think Slot has shown his hand somewhat this season by his clear preferences and regular omissions throughout the season.
If we can, fingers crossed, finish off what we have started without any bloody dramas, and go on to win the Premier League Title, it will be very interesting to see his take on the comings and goings in the Summer.
If he wins the Title in his first season, with a squad of players that are not all his first choice and yet still managing to compete so strongly in Europe and the domestic Cup competitions will be a quite remarkable achievement.
Just imagine what he could go onto achieve next season with one or two players he believes are far better suited to his style of play… a few tweeks here and there may be quite significant in terms of our potential achievements next season.
I think that defensively Tsimikas race is run and possibly even Gomez, subject to the VVD scenario, especially given the obvious need for stronger competition in both positions and with one eye firmly on the future evolvement of our defence as a whole…
I think Robbo will be more of a squad player next season, given all the noises around potential new left backs we have heard all season… Assuming Trent is done, a new Right back as back up / challenger for Bradley is an absolute must.
I think Endo by his versatility and sheer professional attitude on and of the pitch (Milneresque…) may have won a reprieve in Slots eyes, whether Endo wants to stay on that basis is another matter.
I do think Elliott and Jones are the most vulnerable in midfield given their infrequent selections and the clear need for a quality back up for both Gravenberch and Macca…I am sure I read somewhere that Slots preference is to work with a smaller squad of real quality spread across every position, rather than a squad bloated with several just really good players rather than top drawer.
Up front, assuming Salah stays is the most interesting area of the squad that quite clearly needs a significant refresh…
Nunez I believe has run his race and it’s in both parties interests that he moves on, Jota is tricky one and I can see him getting another year, given his obvious talent, but if he breaks down with another injury next season, I can see him going in January. Chiesa much like Jota clearly has talent and I can see a world were Slot gives him one more season as back up to Salah, who will clearly need to be rotated more next year and the worrying AFCON issue.. that leaves Gakpo and Diaz.
I am a big fan of Diaz but he does have a tendency to run hot and cold throughout the season and so I can see a World where Slot decides he just needs better… same with Gakpo if I am being honest…
In recap, I think one of the biggest strengths of this squad is the team spirit, they all seem to get on really well with no ego’s, as long as we don't upset that chemistry in the summer, I think next season could end up being more exciting than this one…
Hey ho fingers crossed, first and foremost lets get this fucking Premier League won, celebrate nos 20 and then we can all look forward with renewed optimism to the 25/26 Premier League season..
Good post BPF but regardless of whether a player is truly class or just good/very good they will still suffer fatigue if overplayed. We don't have 18 class players now. Never did. No way FSG is stumping up for 22 of them. Clubs that win trebles need good draws and some luck in domestic cups etc
There's plenty of top strikers out there around the world atm wanting moves
Just looking at slysports, there's at least 5 in a article they've done I wouldn't mind here and would improve us.
No doubt they'll all move everywhere but here and score goals for fun.
I do like Cunha as a fit for us, it’s just his disciplinary issues.
I don’t think we need to sign too many players, we just need to add splashes of real quality to the first team. If we can do this I think it will create a relatively big upgrade on our overall squad.
For example, if we sign Kerkez at left back, with Robbo pushing him and stepping in as and when required, either through injury, form, suspension or simply squad rotation.. that one signing alone provides a big upgrade on the left back position, when it is compared to the Robbo / Tsimikas combo…
Again, if we sign flavour of the month Isak as our starter with Jota as back-up, pushing him and stepping in as and when required a lá Robbo at left back, again its a big upgrade in that position when compared to the Jota start Nunez back up combo…
It could be argued that the signing off Kerkez might add fresh impetus to the likes of Diaz and Gakpo if either or both of them stayed, and on the other wing Salah might benefit from the dynamism of Bradley bombing either side of him rather than the more technical support of Trent.
Signing two robust and physical World class defensive midfielders would allow Slot to simply alternate the whole midfield, game by game with little or no drop off in quality, in fact the benefit of having a midfield that shares the workload more evenly could result in a significant improvement…
I cannot see us signing more than 5 players this summer, with a minimum 2-3 players moving on..The examples I have just listed are just four signings with three sales which I am sure FSG must realise is an investment that needs to be made if they want to seriously challenge on 3 / 4 fronts next season..
Hey ho… I am sure that Edwards and Co are looking at every option / opportunity out there..interesting times methinks
