    Transfer spend…

I have read lots of column inches regards the potential spend of LFC this Transfer Window, which may well end up exceeding over €200M, and tbh nobody expected FSG to agree to such a massive commitment, especially given their history to date in the Transfer Market.

    However, is that fair ?

If you take into account inflation, for example VVD’s transfer fee in todays money, according to the Bank of England, would actually represent approximately € 118M in todays money, not that far off what we are considering paying for an attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, rather than a central defender.

Now, Florian Wirtz, like Virgil, is considered a generation talent, who is at the top of his game and is only 22, with massive potential for further growth, and even now at this stage of his career, is considered to be the best player in Germany.

However, when we bought VVD he was almost 27, 5 years older than Wirtz, and tbf his World class reputation was actually made at LFC, what we bought at the time was potential… not the finished product, hence the shock by every pundit at the fee paid by LFC.

    How wrong we all were….!!

So with that in mind, if you look at our historical Transfer spend taking into account inflation, since the season 2014/15 right up to last season 2024/25, which in total represents 11 complete seasons.

All the following Figures are in Euros and represent what the actual equivalent values of monies spent in those seasons would actually equate to in 2025.

    Season 2014/15…. Total spend € 208.53M = Net spend € 71.83M

    Season 2017/18…. Total spend € 225.77M = Net profit € 14.11M

    Season 2018/19…. Total spend € 232.72M = Net spend € 179.94M

    Season 2022/23…. Total spend € 151.88M = Net spend € 67.81M

    Season 2023/24…. Total spend € 176.99M = Net spend € 114.51M

So we can see that in two of those 11 seasons our Transfer spend exceeded €150M and in three other seasons our Transfer spend exceeded €200M.

As always, the Net spend figure tells a more complete story and we only exceeded €100M in two of the 11 seasons.

So whilst we are at the beginning of this Transfer window, regardless of what we end up spending for Wirtz, Kerkez and A.N Others… it’s only when we reach the end of this window, and we can see who we have actually sold to balance the books, will we actually know how this season compares to previous seasons Net spend figures.

Once we know that, only then can we assess if FSG have deviated off their tried and tested transfer policy strategy to date, or whether the numbers actually confirm it’s a case of more of the same.

Just for the record, the average Net season spend over the previous 11 seasons in question, is equivalent to approximately €50.76M in todays money per season.

Until the window shuts and we see how many have gone out of the door and for how much we won’t know if there’s anything to discuss.
We will recoup between £150m - £200m from player sales, it’s a complete squad overhaul and while I’m not sure I would have paid €150m on one player, I reserve judgement until the buying and selling has been completed.

Good post. Would be great if we could move on nunez for a decent fee. Let's say 60m. Take that off wirtz's price and it's more like 70m which is not outrageous in today's market. Whether we can get that for nunez is the problem.

And even if it is nunez.... we still a player down, so not exactly adding to the depth

even though we won the league, if we had better competition that took us all the way we'd have been stuffed as we burned out even against PSG we was tired then.

yes we need quality, but we need good options for rotation too, blowing the budget on one player, i'm not sure.

Wirtz is a real coup. Never thought we had a prayer of getting him a few months back - nailed on for Bayern the lad was.

I’m no fan of the owners but this is up there with Klopp - Virgil…. imo

Finalise Kerkez, land a CB, a CF and ideally a DM. and we are smoking

True but nunez was a passenger anyway so anything we get for him is a bonus.

luckily sesko doesn't want to go Saudi (or unlucky if he signs for arsenal and smashes the league) ..... so maybe they'll come for nunez instead

Would be amazing to get our money back for Nunez. Probably a fantasy but we can dream. We did get our money back on Benteke all those years ago which was a big enough fee at the time.
From the moment I picked your book up until I laid it down, I convulsed with laughter. Someday I intend on reading it. Groucho Marx
