Chess, ski-ing, winter sports they excel.
In all seriousness, when thinking of the impact of things like weather (pitches) and expense (heating pitches in cooler climes) it makes sense that certain countries are less likely to excel.
Depending on how you look at a map, the most "Eastern" countries to win a World Cup are Italy and Germany, which is a bit mad really.

I never saw a ussr team play. Was quite young and didn't have a TV for euro 88, had one for italia 90.
How did the cultures combine in 88 ?
Or is it a case of being able to use the different peoples of the ussr to build a team.
Like if Croatia had another 4 million people would they not just produce more technically gifted players ?
Whereas China or India both with a massive population dont produce teams near the quality of top international sides. Granted football isn't one of their big sports.
Hehe.
I know you are joking but the “state sponsored doping” stories were always heavily propagandised.
As Lindford Christie said to camera - we in Britain are doping at least as much as they have been and more - and in the US it has been rife since the 70’s.
Exemptions and WADA corruption mean that so many athletes from friendly nations go unpunished face silent - Ahem - Nadal - or worse.
Doping is just rife in Olympic competitions sadly.
