For the ocularly challenged.
I think there are 2 things here.
1. Jota definitely changes direction OR stumbles last minute to make contact with the keeper
2. The keeper is very likely to Collide anyway even if he doesn’t
What I first thought was “never a pen in a million years” is actually not nearly so cut and dry.
We don’t know that the keeper would have contacted with Jota had he continued in the direction of the ball - but he easily could.
A rather grey area here and a penalty decision is not a clear and obvious mistake - for me at least.
Think…if we imagine we are Jota and can think like a forward - one who is that direct and scores goals
He is actually trying a very skilful manoeuvre. Trying to run to the left of the keeper and flick the ball over to the right and into an empty net.
Now granted - this is after multiple views IN slow motion…but IF we watch his eyes as he runs through, they definitely look past the keeper and at the goal. His intention seems to be that the ball goes there.
But he doesn’t connect properly with the ball - keeper in his eye line puts him off or more likely a dodgy bounce off uneven turf.
Dunno for certain but that’s my take. Would have been an amazing goal had it come off.
I know many will disagree BUT a Penalty is not such a bad shout the more I see it from this angle.

He actually needs to jump right in order to move left, which is where the ball went
see here I have made it closer to real speed and repeated the action.
Jota seemingly attempts to score with a flick from the outside of his right foot while the defender tries to clear.. This is a good reason why he veers to the right- the defender has affected his direction so it cannot really be put solely on Jota.
he appears to change direction to collide but actually changes direction to block off the defender and shoot. very different from what was described by so many of us (myself included) and so many pundits.
After exhaustive analysis I believe this was a penalty. Correct call and missed by most.
