Liverpool have enquired about signing Ajax's 22-year-old Brazil winger Antony, who has also been linked with Manchester United. (Football Insider)

I'd say you are spot on about Ajax trying to get Man United to cough up.

Besides the fact that Antony probably needs a bit more development, I just don't think we start the campaign with Salah, Diaz, Núñez, Jota, Firmino, Carvalho AND add Antony to stick another hurdle in the path of a lad like Gordon (who, if memory serves, started in the League Cup semi-final, though I'd need to fact check myself) who has potential.

If it were next Summer and Firmino was leaving then maybe. Isn't Nico Williams (20, winger, Athletic Bilbao - not Neco) available on a free next Summer? You'd think Salah, Jota, Diaz, Núñez and Carvalho will be part of the furniture for the next few seasons so don't foresee big fees on an attacker on the Horizon unless a gem appears - could foresee another midfielder (after the Bellingham/alternative acquisition) before an attacker depending on Keita's contract and the development of Jones.

Klopp is undoubtedly the largest factor in our success and needless to say, transfers/investment play a big role too, nobody would begrudge you that stance - Klopp is immense and finances are an important part of competing.

I do think however that you're doing a slight disservice to the backroom staff - in recruitment for example players like Brandt and Gotze would be here rather than Mane and Salah - indeed, Salah was one Klopp's been reported to have needed persuading on yet he is now our best-paid player.

Jürgen himself would tell you that he couldn't so his job without the staff he has at the club, some of whom have PhDs and are very high up in their field.

All of these "bits and pieces" stack up. Klopp is of course the roots and the trunk of the tree, but the branches, buds and leaves all play a part as well.

Why use a hypothetical situation as a form of criticism ?

Had we signed Brandt or Gotze, there's a good chance one if not both would have had far better careers.

It's funny, here Mane is posited as a world class player, but in another thread his loss is not a big deal so much under Klopp who carries on.

Very true Sid.. I guess I was just suggesting that all these undoubtably great professionals could be at other clubs or here with another manager and their effect would very likely be far less than they are with a maestro like Jurgen. His lack of ego being just another weapon in his arsenal.

Don't want to start a whole new thread for a friendly kick about. Watching our lads against Leipzig. We look sharp in the press. Firmino looking good, as in last game. he provides a smart assist for Salah to have an easy sidefoot into the left hand corner, from about the penalty spot.
Ali still not in goal, which always compromises our high line when Adrian plays. Back four as usual.Midfield Thiago, Fab and Keita. Nabi having one of his better games i think. At the end of the first half our players beginning to look tired. i think they have been doing pretty intense fitness training (Not like conte's Spurs though!).
I will give a couple of updates on the second half.
