Nearly a 1/3 of a billion pounds on attacking players!

It's not the money being (or not being) spent, it's how it is being spent.

Yesterday's starting line up was ridiculous.
Good points and really quite worrying. Surely that line up from yesterday was not something that will be used competitively?
    It's looking like Keegan's Newcastle.

    That’s pretty clear.

Klopp consistently has also stated that he HAS to work with what the owners decide is prudent. This is a clear statement that behind every transfer - Fee, Salary and potential sell on value - are the factors which carry more importance - than what is actually needed on the pitch,

This is a handicap. You expect it at a mid table club - NOT the most successful club in the land
    100%.
Clearly why we've gone nowhere near Gvardiol or Caicedo. The immediate increase in quality they would bring is obvious but it's deemed not worth it for whatever reason. It's completely at odds with the overall goal of trying to ensure success is sustained.
People can defend the model and owners all they want but we are only going one way under them..

Roméo #Lavia not included today on the Cup game with #SaintsFC and was not at the training camp this morning. Player’s side looking for closing the deal today between #LiverpoolFC & #SouthamptonFC.

This chap is close to the agent.

that’s until this summer with 7 out and 2 in.

It’s pathetic as is any attempt to defend it

2 of that 6 are just signed in our BIG WINDOW…

Naturally since 2020 nobody has aged either…

I mean - these frauds are banking on people simply looking at what we have added and ignoring all other factors.
Correct, nó midfielders left until this summer when we lost 5. I don't believe we were planning on letting both Fabinho and henderson go this summer. Hence we are now lacking midfielders.

We don't spend enough compared to our rivals. Midfield needed addressing last year. The singing of nunez could definitly be questioned when midfield needed updating. However Mane had left. It should also be questioned why was klopp given Artúr instead of a proper midfielder?

Oh yes, we were waiting for Bellingham. It comes back to a lack of funds.

    This is embarrassing.
Liverpool for years now have got deals done quickly with no fuss.
If you don’t think he’s worth 50M move on, if you really want him pay it.
Also not sure why LFC aren’t in for Caicedo, yes it’s a lot of money but Liverpool got big money for JH/FAB

Good job chelsea want Caicedo otherwise we wouldn't be getting Lavia

Totally understand what you mean and in this instance given the ever-shrinking timescale we probably should, but will also quote what I said a few pages back for balance as it's relevant to the "just give them what they want" aspect of transfers.

Am I right in saying we made an initial bid of £36m for Lavia? Fans have been of the "it's only a few million" mindset to meet their £50m evaluation - and on paper I get it - £14m isn't a massive amount of money in the grand scheme of football transfers.

However, we are known for having our own evaluations of what someone costs and being keen not to overpay. If we did go and get him at £50m for example (versus the initial £36m) then the increase is £14m. It's worth pointing out here that £14m represents a 38.889% chunk of £36m ie an overpayment of our perceived evaluation of nearly 40%.

I imagine - and this is purely speculation so take it for what it is - that as part of our process we will have our evaluations of players based on statistical analysis, then a ball-park percentage we are willing to overpay for the right targets as a general rule and then anything that is over that we either walk away from OR decide the extent to which we'll overshoot via debate within a committee.

As a lesser example, I would 100% understand the frustration of us going for a target at £8m, a club asking for £12m and fans being livid because "it's only £4m" - which is a tiny amount of money in the current market. However, it would also represent a whopping 50% overpay of your valuation and if you overpay regularly, you'll get taken to the cleaners when it comes to the bigger names - so I could also understand walking from such a deal despite how little £4m is in a footballing context. A £75m Van Dijk style bid suddenly becomes a request to cough up £112.5m and so on - and thus your capacity to afford multiple targets is lessened.

For the record I do believe that sometimes you do have to overpay and occasionally should, but I would be keen to strike the right balance. The same with sales - we could have had a combined £25m for Ox and Phillips (£12.5m bids came in) and we held out for £30m (we wanted £15m each) and in a context where we wanted/needed an extra mid (rather than Arthur) I'd have taken that money and reinvested it into recruitment immediately even though it would go against the principle of doing business at the "right" amount - having self-imposed rules to keep business sensible is great but occasionally rules need to be bent too.

At the end of the day.....I mean transfer..... clubs have a price. Some hold out and get what they want, looks like Saints are doing that.
Liverpool have a justified reputation now for being cheap, you can't always skim clubs like we have. Gakpo, MacAllister and probably Diaz are recent transfers we have got for what seems below their market value.
Liverpool can't have it all ways.

Can't blame Southampton for holding out given Man City's stake in the player.
