The buy-out aspect is interesting. Committing £51m in one fell swoop is limiting from an amortisation perspective - fees are normally paid in installments. Van Dijk for example I think was 3 annual installments of £25m.

There's every possibility (aside from Martin having to actually make his mind up of course) that we badly want the player, but want more wiggle-room for other business in the window.

One way to do that would be to negotiate a higher fee, but different payment structure. So for example we could offer them something like "we'll give you £60m instead of £51m, but we can't pay it all at once" - and negotiate for something like a £30m sum up-front and a guaranteed 3 extra £10m installments over the coming seasons.

Gives us more wiggle-room from a PSR/FFP perspective (we're in a better place than most to be fair) and Socieded get extra money, even if it isn't right away.

Just an example. The lack of access we have to what is going on is obviously a source of frustration. With the clock ticking, we'll at least find out one way or another bloody soon.

If he comes in, we also need to make a sale I should think. At my last count I think we had 26 seniors (before counting Nat Phillips) and the sale of Carvalho brought it to 25 - so if Zubimendi comes in we are back up to 26 again. We are likely negotiating with a side that came in for someone else (Endo, let's say) with a view to agreeing what they'll be willing to pay if we get this over the line.
Would Clark count as that needed sale?

As far as I know, amortisation is an accounting practice and it makes little difference if the fee is paid up front or in installments by the books. The fee is amortised over the length of the contract.

No - he's 19 - we would need to sell a senior player somewhere to make a space. Give me a few minutes and I'll list an approximation of our squad. At work and have to use mobile, which I always find more finicky than using the PC, but I won't be too long.

Okay, so, an approximation of how we are looking is as follows -

    Goalkeepers - we have 3 -

    Alisson
    Kelleher
    Jaros

Defenders - we have 9 - (up to 12 players)

    Robertson
    Tsimikas
    Van Dijk
    Konate
    Gomez
    Sepp
    Quansah
    Trent
    Bradley

Midfielders - we have 8 - (up to 20 players)

    Mac Allister
    Szoboszlai
    Jones
    Elliott
    Gravenberch
    Endo
    Bajcetic
    Morton

Forwards - we have 5 - (up to 25 players)
    Salah
    Núñez
    Jota
    Gakpo
    Diaz

We were sitting at 26 (too many) but sold Carvalho, so are at the 25 mark, provisionally. So it (hypothetical, granted) Zubimendi comes in we go back up to 26. Or if (very unlikely) we brought Zubimendi and Gordon in one window ( ) then we would be up to 27 and so on.

So, where possible, sell first - or have an agreement in place behind closed doors with someone so that if player X is bought by us, they will get to buy player Y.

So (again, all hypothetical) we were bringing Gordon in, we might be selling Diaz - or bringing Zubimendi in, we might be selling Endo.

Oh and none of this accounts for Nat Phillips, who is on first-team wages and seemingly willing to take the cash until his contract runs dry - which I don't blame him for as he isn't exactly going to a bigger club than us in a hurry. So if we include him, then we really need to be making 2 sales at a minimum.

If the Zubi deal goes through I wonder if they go back to Marseille and talk about Endo again? I can see that or I'd actually rather that than SB go out on loan.

Van Den Berg not being used yesterday might be an indication too.

I'd say if Zubimendi comes in, Endo goes.

Endo is 32 in February and doesn't have the attributes of a 6 that Slot seems to want.

Whilst 32 is hardly "ancient" in footballing terms, we've seen the age profile we tend to go for under the current set-up.

    But we'll see.

Personally I’d be stunned, think they’d have far more luck negotiating with Burnley.
