Of course they have.
- Will incur fewm within the fanbase, which leads to more retweets, shares, likes, clicks.
- We're not going to publicly state "desperate for a 6" as it is a shit way to get negotiations started on an alternative.
- We're not going to set Hughes up by declaring an interest as it'll make him look a right mug if he fails on a back-up target as well, in his first window with us.
Triple score on the Transfer Roulette wheel.
Hughes already looks like a mug.
They don't have to say anything but the fact they have said that tells us about their intentions.
Everyone knew we were desperate for a good 6 so it's not news at all regardless.
That midfield without Macallister is a frightening prospect.
So will we now bring in the cheaper backup? Someone said we were linked with Rabiot previously. Isn't he on a free? If we end up with him, we in trouble.
We should certainly target a back-up target. Our back-ups often work out alright.
Here are 3 lads that were major targets for us at different stages -
- Christian Pulisic
- Julian Brandt
- Mario Gotze
- and we did absolutely fine without them, arguably benefitting from getting the alternate targets.
It seems that Slot doesn't rate Endo, so if a younger prospect isn't ready to step in to a midfield position (Nyoni looks promising but it's too early, Bajcetic needs minutes via a well-picked loan) then we should definitely have a look at the likes of Stiller, Ederson, Koopmeiners, Varela etc and see what's possible.
I totally get the idea of improving your "ceiling" but there's also a lot to be said for raising your "floor" as well, so if there is an upgrade to be had for Slot's vision of how our midfield should look then we should aim for it, rather than re-entering the this-player-must-elevate-our-starting-XI overnight waters again.
