Then there is the risk of it not working out, player doesn’t settle, gets injured etc etc but if that’s the case it’s not down to lack of ambition.

I don’t want to see the club waste money like Man U or Chelsea do but I also dont like to see the owners do things on the cheap. Negotiating for a cheaper deal then ultimately losing out. (Romeo Lavia)

Endo was a cheap stop gap and I thought he was decent enough after he had ‘bedded in’ (I know some on here don’t agree) but if a DM was much needed last summer and that’s still the case this summer then the owners are going to have to put their hands in their pockets and pay what is needed to find the right player for the club.

The difficult window will be next summer when potentially Mo, Virg and Trent all bugger off for nothing. The shit will seriously hit the fan on here when FSG fanny around with their replacements (assuming contracts aren’t signed before then).
Endo did well last season. I don’t see an issue with him covering the DM role.

The reality is we have a very good squad. Klopp said it was much further along than expected. I trust his judgement. I’m glad Slot hasn’t come in and tried to change things up. We have every reason to be optimistic and excited for the season ahead. That’s how I’ll approach it.

We’re going to need incredible luck to replace VVD and Salah. Maybe one of the youngsters improves enough this season (Doak?). Maybe Nunez converts more of his chances and the Mo situation doesn’t seem as bad. Maybe we’ll have to take the Coutinho route again. Perish the thought So yes, Slot and team have a job on their hands. That’s what he’s paid for. It’s going to be very interesting to watch.

Totally get it - it can and will vary.

I would say I am too - and I very much understand that mind-set. I often hear the "we don't spend" narrative (and we have had a couple of underwhelming windows, for sure) and I typically never really hear a particular, or even approximate amount that people would aspire to and/or be "fine" with, so was curious - and chose money as the metric as "expenditure" is so-often the word affiliated with us, or the lack thereof.

In a similar vein, I often hear Reds speak at great length saying how much they hate financial doping and player-hoarding, but also asking us to "go big" - and I often wonder what they consider to be the "line" as it were between being ambitious and following a policy of "if you can't beat them, join them" if you like. Not asking for you or anyone else's thoughts on that at the moment, mind. Potential headache of a topic that I currently have no appetite for. I hate the idea (as a general principle) of multi-club ownership - I think it's poor for the wider game - yet know we'll end up having to do it to be competitive - and it makes me uncomfortable.

Very similar mode of thinking for me as well - I think where a few posters and I clash heads is the extent of this mindset, ie they think I want to "cut corners" and "scrimp" at every available opportunity whereas the reality is I just want to see good business done, though sustainably as often as possible. I've said before for example that (with the gift of hindsight, granted) that if Alisson had cost £95m and Van Dijk had cost £100m nobody would mind, because they still would have been good value for it. I often wonder if those had been the fees and thus we had spent more (net) in that window, would the complaint about recouping so much from the Coutinho sale even be an issue.

With some of the above said, I thought I'd cast back to last Summer. Fees are approximate -

    Main ins

    Szoboszlai - £60m
    Gravenberch - £34m
    Mac Allister - £35m
    Endo - £16m

    Spent approx £145m

    Main outs

    Henderson - £12m
    Fabinho - £40m

    Recouped approx £52m

Approximate net spend from main transfers - £93m - though I could be forgetting a big sale or big buy, which would be a bit embarassing

With (from within) Quansah replacing Matip (Quansah is nowhere near as good yet, but will have a longer career at 21 than Matip will at 33 - and will hopefully be available more often being a good future-proofing exercise and Thiago (incredible footballer to watch) and his poor injury record/reasonably high age relative to football coming off the wage bill. I'm of the opinion that the money that was coming out of the club each week on Thiago could be better spent, though would emphasise that isn't the same as finding as talented a player.

Anyway - I think that was a good window and a net improvement in what I might call "availabilty x ability" - if such windows were more common than the weaker windows. Perhaps a level that, dare I say it, most would be happy with? That's an open question I guess.

To paint it another way, had Zubimendi joined (I'll acknowledge it's an absolutely moot point, seeing as he didn't) for £51m we would have spent (not net, granted) £196m on our midfield within a roughly 13-month period. That's very respectable - and we were one transfer away from that. I'd be much more understanding of general anti-FSG sentiment if we were three transfers away, for example. I just don't think we are that far off as to merit the extent of (some of) the vitriol, but might be placing too much faith in the squad.

Oh and I still want transfers
I'm on my phone and in and out of the forum. Sounds like we have similar opi9nins of the window. But in regard the midfield spend last year. I feel that was due to poor planning again. We got rid of a load of midfielders and had to replace all at once. That's why the midfield spend is so big the last year. Also, we are still missing that 6 we have been after for 3 years?

I'd rather sell and reinvest than see them leave on free contracts, which are more beneficial for themselves of course. Looks like they'll sign up or leave on free contracts next summer.

We've come off the back of a title challenge that was stomped by United, have a new manager in situ to freshen things up and sort out the defense as Jurgen quipped. Anfield is bigger,
    60,000+ capacity.

For this season, these 3 lads are still here and the squad is much the same.
Have they been offered any contracts to commit too? Which is where this began. You would hope something is going on, but back to the original point, virgil hinted at no offer on the table, yet.

Imagine all 3 do leave for free next summer and we sign no one this summer.

The squad next year will be in real trouble and we will need huge investment to get back to where we are, never mind ahead of where we are.

Unfortunatly, my outlook is currently very negative for the futur.

If everything goes wrong and everyone at the club is asleep at the wheel then we’ll have a problem next summer.

There’s an alternative reality where the new manager and back room staff have a plan and will execute on it. In which case, you have nothing to worry about.

Too true. But right now based on what has happened in this relatively short time, the 1st option is looking more likely. Ask me again in 2 months and I might give you a different answer.

Regularly the same, don't worry! Quoting individual aspects of posts is super fiddly on a phone, but I happen to be at the PC catching up on some data input so I'm more easily able to single out certain points. I struggle a bit with certain aspects of the phone version of the site.

I don't disagree - succession planning has been an area that we haven't always excelled in. I think it's been reasonably good in attack (Núñez, Jota, Gakpo, Diaz) but we can always aim higher. With the midfield, I don't think it has been quite as smooth a transition, though having initially made the error (poor planning ahead) we sought to remedy it quickly - and did a reasonably good job. If we do acquire a midfielder this Summer (don't think we will, but if we do) then five mids within 13 years or so would be good. Even if we don't and even if we ignore Endo, the fact that we got -

    - Mac Allister (25, room to improve)
    - Szoboszlai (23, room to improve)
    - Gravenberch (22, room to improve)

    - to supplement -

    - Jones (23, room to improve)
    - Elliott (21, room to improve)
    - Bajcetic (19, room to improve)

    - and appear to have the possibility of a prospect in Nyoni to break through, ain't too shabby - though I'd still like one more quality addition (ideally under-26) to supplement that group. Targets have been -

    Zubimendi (25)
    Tchouaméni (24)
    Caicedo (22)
    Bellingham (21)
    Lavia (20)

    - and we have ultimately failed, so no issue with calls for a re-think, including a slight risk increase - whether that's targeting players at earlier stages in their career (wish we did this more often!) or deciding that once in a while it is okay to "over-pay" (needs to be judged very carefully) or looking at the 27-30 market that has less resale value (increased risk) occasionally to supplement - which we did with Endo, who is 31 years old.

I don't think we are too far away from having what we might feel is a "complete" squad - and then of course, once you have risen to that new plateau, you continue to find ways to improve once more, including the recognition of when the occasional player is at peak-value and making the sale. That's an aspect that some fans don't seem to like ("pulling a Coutinho") but I think it would be better to do it occasionally, rather than see players leave on a free as often as we do.

    If I recall correctly -

    - Milner
    - Thiago
    - Matip
    - Firmino
    - Ox
    - Naby
    - Origi
    - Wijnaldum

We have, on a couple of occasions, been too stubborn on evalutations. I'm of the belief that we could (and should) have accepted slightly less once in a while on a bid, taken the money, then reinvested. There's value (that word again, hard to avoid) sometimes in getting wages off the books if a player doesn't merit them anymore, be it through a high level of injury or being past their peak - Ox, Keita, Matip and Thiago cost us something like £580,000 per week for example, almost enough to cover the wages of 3 players that would want £200,000k per week.

There are modifications we need to make to our set-up, our stances on fees and our decision-making, but for me that is tweaking the blue-print, rather than ripping it up entirely.

Did you predict we’d bid £51m but the player would decide to stay where he was?

Edward’s was always wildly overrated & given far too much credit for our success & the cracks are certainly showing already on his return with our frankly pathetic window & aspirations with him back at the club
