Makes you realise how tough it is outside of the lads in the absolute elite bracket.

Having been a part of a centre-back partnership that helped Liverpool at a key time (not for long, admittedly) I would have thought he could, in time, have managed to get football at a side in the Championship and a reasonable career.

Being on loan at a League Two side at 23 years of age feels pretty bleak for him.

34m on a keeper we don't need when the club hasn't got a pot to piss in. You couldn't make it up. How the fuck is this Hughes bloke allowing this to happen?

Hilarious aint it, that's only because we've made player sales too.

Well, that's one way to look at it - and he certainly isn't our most pressing priority position.

Another way to look at it is we're probably going to get one of the top goalies of the future for less than twice the price of what would have been our 5th-choice centre-back in Sepp.

It future-proofs us a bit against an Alisson departure (he is contracted until the end of the 26/27 season) which I wouldn't rule out, as I can see him wanting to finish his career in Brazil rather than Saturday with us until he is 38-40. Not to mention we know that Kelleher will likely push for a move for first-team football at some stage.

It's honestly the sort of business we should be doing way more of. I think if we had sorted out other areas first ( 3 key player contracts, a 6, a centre, depth at right-wing-forward) it would be receiving the praise it merits.

People understandably stress about the prospect of us not replacing players, or replacing them too late - so easing future stress by addressing a key position before it becomes a problem makes a lot of sense to me. The key thing is to try to ensure that it isn't our only business before the window shuts, as addressing centre-back, depth for Salah, the midfield and the 3 big contract situations one way or another are more pressing needs.

How about present proofing our 6 and CB position?

No sign of our three main men signing new deals either.

We really are painting ourselves into a corner

How do you leave 3 of your most influential players get to the last year of their contracts all at once?

Did they think Mo and Virgil would be passed it by now?

Mo is in great condition and still scoring.

Virgil is on the wane but his influence is massive on the team and he is still our best cb.

Trent is young and gifted. A local lad with many years ahead of him.

I can't understand how it got here. With whole klopp announcement last year, edwards coming back and the shake up we must have taken our eye off this big time. That or there is a big plan in place.

Well of course - needless to say, I want this. I have called out for transfers in 3 positions on numerous occasions this Summer and they are 2 of them.

When it comes to the 6 it seems we want a top quality player, or to not bother buying. It's looking reminiscent of us using Milner as a left-back for a season before getting Robertson in, because "the right" left-back wasn't available. If a 9/10 or 10/10 player isn't available, I'm inclined to get the 7/10 or 8/10 player in, rather than "do nothing" but the club may see it differently. They may see little point in buying a "slight upgrade" that won't dramatically improve our points tally. A "decent" player can be £30m+ these days and chucking that kind of cash on someone perfectly average would be deemed wasteful by our staff I imagine.

Plus it's Hughes' first window with us. Perhaps he is just working on deals he feels he has a high chance of completing so he increases his chances of keeping his job for a prolonged spell? Perhaps the proverbial purse strings are even tighter this seasons until he proves his competence in the role at a level above Bournemouth's? Who is to say - we'll likely have a clearer picture when the window closes in 10 (?) days. He seems to be doing a reasonable job with sales - if the buys can start to match up with that, it will be encouraging. The Zubimendi fall-out intensified the magnifying glass on him a bit.

As to centre-back, it's shaping up to look like Sepp (would have been 5th choice, wants out) will go and Gomez (would have been 4th choice, rumoured to want out) will go - and the combined money accrued will be used to buy someone else.

If we end up buying a high-quality 1st-3rd choice centre-back in the 21-25 sort of age range who wants to be here, has a good fitness record and fits the system, having used money from 4th+5th choice, then I think that would represent good business personally. Selling Gomez and Sepp but not bringing anyone in would be poor, whilst selling Sepp but keeping Gomez would be "okay" but not great.

So hopefully we'll get centre-back business done yet. If the right one does come in, with the right age profile, then we potentially have 3-of-4 centre-backs in their mid-20s or younger, which helps the present and the future.
