Matip’s been too top class at his best & he has had some fairly long sustained spells of that as well as his share of time out. He was a great defender, hit a great diagonal switch & was pretty handing driving forward from RCB on several occasions making players come out of their low block shape

There are so many great things I could say about Matip but one thing I remember most was he and Fab being paired at CB in a cup game against lower league, both just coming back from injury I think, and someone here referred to them as “A great lolloping pair of giraffes” 😂

It was pretty accurate on their performances that game, they were both awful, well off the pace

    From the BBC....

Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip has announced his retirement from football aged 33.

The defender joined the Reds in 2016 from German side Schalke and went on to make 201 appearances for Liverpool, winning five major trophies.

Matip provided an assist in the 2019 Champions League final for Divock Origi's goal in the 2-0 victory against Tottenham in Madrid, helping Liverpool win their sixth European Cup.

Injuries limited the defender to just nine appearances in Liverpool's 2019-20 Premier League-winning side, which ended the club's 30-year wait for a league title.

Matip left Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 campaign, having sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury which curtailed his final season at the club.

He earned 27 caps for his country and retires as a free agent, having failed to join another club following his departure from Liverpool

Surprised he didn't go saudi or america or drop down a league, I guess his body is a mess.

Thank you matip, what a player with the ball for a CB I miss his forward runs, last person like that was Agger?

Only 33, I though he was older.
I'm sure he's got enough money to live a very nice lifestyle and theres No point possibly crippling yourself in later life.
Them runs he made will live long in the memory, cheers Joel.
