Watching Bernardo Silva at City and seeing him have a free role ,I can see Wirtz playing that role. Picking the ball up from the centre halfs and picking a pass better than any centre half. And as Jozza says, no need for 2 holding midfielders just 1 like Busquets or a Fabinho type. And make it their job.

We need to sign midfielders on a par with our 1st choice mids (assume the same level we know those 1st choice mids can play at), that's got to happen in the summer if not before. And tough decisions need to be made, to fund some of it you sell chiesa,endo,Jones,Elliott and you sell Gomez and Robertson to partially fund arrival of a new CB/LB utility player. For too long our backup players are way off pushing the starters. And up front gakpo and salah can go too. Are we a 5th or better squad or a PL chasing squad, without a Klopp like leader to drag extra out of the squad we can already see what we are...

He’s probably our best midfielder this season in all honesty.

He’s our worst midfielder this season not on individual ability but simply because we didn’t need him and his presence and Slot’s insistence all the play goes through him are nullifying last seasons Premier Leagues best midfield 3 and preventing them playing at their best

He and the style of play Slot is trying to put in place take away the space last seasons best midfield 3 used to operate in and they’re all expected to try and give the ball to him to make the play rather than do so collectively which massively detracts from the element of being able to score from anywhere created by any number of players

Macca and Szobo were both part of that 3 last season, CCTV claims it was a 4231 it wasn’t I’ve been watching highlights and goals it was a 3 and one of Macca Szobo or Grav moved into the 10 position stringing in the space created by our 2 wide forwards being on the oppositions line Grav mostly through driving it forward a great thing to do in the 433 nullified by Wirtz’s presence

Essentially we have an unnecessary 4th midfielder blocking all the lines and space and stifling the other 3 from doing what they did last season

This also meaning we’re constantly short of a forward and don’t have two wide forwards up pushing the line back creating the space for one or two of our mids to arrive into

Go and watch all the goals from last season, note the directness, note how influential Diaz and Mo were note they’re frequently further forward then the 9 so not a 4231 not one of the 3 mids, sometimes 2 arrive in the space
