  • Penalty shoot-outs

So, that's our second penalty shoot-out loss under Arne. Is it something we need to be concerned about?
Against PSG, and today, I never felt any confidence for our chances.
Kelleher seemed to be a better bet for
shoot-outs in past seasons. Wonder what Mamardash is like?
There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief

It's pretty clear they don't practice penalty kicks during training, just based on how the misses were taken by the players who missed them.

Which isn't necessarily bad, but if you're going to have that attitude then don't let the games get to penalty kicks.

Otherwise, they need to get to practising penalty kicks and identifying good takers.

On the other side of the coin,.....what's that old saying again? Bad at saves during games but great at saving penalties and vice versa.

Allisson has never had a prolific penalty saving record like a Kelleher, so I guess the fact that he saved one today was something of a positive.
But it also underlines the point because he made a couple of saves during the game that not just kept us in the game but allowed the game to go to penalties.......when instead we should have taken those as opportunities to win the game outright in regulation time.

I've seen managers sbstituted out goalies when it becomes inevitably clear that a game is going to penalties and to bring in the understudy who's better at saving penalties.
I'm mixed about that sort of attitude as I'm not sure I'd want slot bringing in Mamardash for Allisson even if they determined in training he's better at penalties.

That's a terrible message to send to your starter - even though I appreciated the games in which we had Kelleher in goal when we had to go with penalties, because if nothing else it also gives the penalty takers more confidence knowing their goalie stood a better chance of nicking a save or two.
But in those games Kelleher was a starter and already in the game and wasn't being brought into the game late for the penalties.

All to say, I don't think Allisson should shoulder any of the blame for today as he gave us all the chances - including the save during the penalties - to win today.

The training staff and coaches have a lot of work on their hands before the season starts, beyond just the outfield issues in defence.
The team should practice penalties, which they very obviously currently don't do.

Palace were certainly helped by the fact that Henderson had his notes on water bottle before each pen. I think he 'guessed' the correct way on all the pens.

That needs to be a rule change.

Don’t see a rule change as being necessary. If I knew the keeper had notes I’d just go the other way. Use your opponent’s strength and turn it into a weakness. He “thinks” he knows which way I’m going, I “know” which way he’s going.

I'd be surprised if they saw it. They'd be concerned on the pens being taken.

His bottle with the notes was wrapped up in his towel. At one point the camera zoomed in on it, highlighting it.

I dont like it, I think it's a bit underhand.

I don't mind keepers having notes, it's part of the fun and games. I'm more concerned about Mo changing his little sideways run up.

One thing about penalty shoot-outs as someone who historically enjoyed following the Italian national side (who had an awful record with pens for years) was that I loved how "safe" it felt when we went to penalties. During my lifetime at least I generally expected us to win up until more recent seasons - and there's a reason for that.

I will embolden the ones where we were on the winning side.

              04/05 - League Cup - Quarter-Final (Tottenham)
              04/05 - Champion's League - Final (AC Milan)
05/06 - FA Cup - Final (West Ham)

14/15 - Europa League - Intermediate stage (Besiktas)
15/16 - League Cup - Third Round (Carlisle United)

19/20 - Community Shield - "Final" (Man City)
19/20 - UEFA Super Cup - "Final" (Chelsea)
19/20 - League Cup - Fourth Round (Arsenal)
              20/21 - Community Shield - "Final" (Arsenal)
20/21 - League Cup - Fourth Round (Arsenal)
              21/22 - League Cup - Quarter-Final (Leicester)
              21/22 - League Cup - Final (Chelsea)
              21/22 - FA Cup - Final (Chelsea)
22/23 - League Cup - Third Round (Derby County)

              24/25 - Champion's League - Last 16 (PSG)
25/26 - Community Shield - "Final" (Crystal Palace)

It's clear to see - we had a boss record......until we didn't. Our last 8 shoot-outs have yielded 4 wins and 4 losses which I guess is the "flip of a coin" that so many claim penalties to be, but in the past we had it bloody good. Indeed, that four-in-a-row spell we had where we beat Leicester, Chelsea twice and then Derby all, to my recollection, had Kelleher in the sticks.....as much as I wouldn't swap having one of the World's best goalies for Kelleher, we can see the benefits of having something of a specialist in there at key times.
