The Premier League is set to bring four key rule changes into practice from the start of the 2026-27 season, the English top flight has confirmed.
The Premier League is currently on its pre-season summer break after the 38-match season was concluded on May 24. But already, the games lawmakers have passed new rules that will be implemented from the start of the new season in August by the Premier League.

The four key areas where there will be significant rule changes impact injuries, restarts, substitutions and VAR decisions.

Here's a breakdown of the primary changes:

Injuries

Any player who receives on-field treatment or assessment is required to leave the field of play for a minimum of 60 seconds. This is an increase from the previous period of 30 seconds used by the Premier League.

Restarts

Throw-ins and goal kicks will now be subject to a 'five second' countdown and restart reversal for clearly delaying the restart of play. If the time limit is exceeded, the opposing team will be awarded the throw-in, and for a goal-kick, the opposing team is awarded a corner.

Substitutions

Players will now have a '10 second' time limit to leave the field of play when they are substituted. If the time limit is exceeded, the substitute cannot enter the field of play until the first stoppage after one minute has elapsed following the restart.

VAR

A VAR review will exist for when a second yellow card is awarded to a player, leading to a red card. This is only for when a player is awarded a second yellow card by the referee, not a potential second yellow card.

The Premier League does not plan to adopt some competition optional laws, including the option for VAR to review incorrectly awarded corners.

All the above rule changes will come into effect from the star of the 2026-27 Premier League season. The fixtures for the new campaign are released on Friday (June 19).

If we sign him and not Yan Diomande, Hedwards need firing on the spot, and that's before you factor in the wages we'd probably have to pay Barcola, and that PSG could use the transfer fee to help buy Diomande.

Anything to stop time wasting has to be good, unless they start using VAR to decide whether it was 5 seconds or 6

I don't understand the excitement and enthusiasm about Barcola. I can't remember ever seeing him have a good game and his finishing is awful. No wonder he can't get a start for PSG.
