Fair points. We could have lost heavily at Palace. We have quality players. Would hope that will count for something. Will take time to gel. The system is the big question for slot.

Well it doesn't Yeah I get about the money but he wanted to leave too, not sure why we didn't offer more in wages when we've just spent over 200m on 2 players, i'm not sure we needed eitherOriginally posted by Steveo View PostWell it matters because someone obviously didn’t think he was worth a significant salary increase for… And on the current evidence - I say he absolutely was. Whoever made that decision must be either blind - clueless or both — because Gakpo was never in his class and now is sat there with no competition
He's gone, so.. yeah worst thing is we didn't replace him, fucking farce.... best window ever they said

To be fair they did try.. Can't level that at them.. Looks like a massive spash in one window tho - a kind of panic..to make up for a fair number of windows with little to no activity at all. Look..it might be proven to be correct in time too, very early days.....but at this moment in time we look to have fallen back despite the outlay..
Beat Chelsea and all thats forgotten..
Lot's of pressure on Slot now.. Hopefully he negotiates it and we find that form. Even a draw but a good showing will help hugely.Last edited by Steveo; 2 October 2025, 01:37 PM.

Well thanks for an answer. Here's a link from today on Guehi.Originally posted by jr81 View PostPersonally, I wouldn't have bought isak for that price. We had Ekitike and that money could have went elsewhere like a cb and CDM.
Regarding the guehi deal, it has been cited the lateness of our final bid as the stumbling block. If we went in early with the extra 5mil I believe we would have gotten him. We haggled to get a cheaper deal due to his contract situation. Left it late. The manager throw a wobbler (which I don't blame him) and forced the owner to pull the deal. Going in earlier with that extra few mil gets the deal done. My opinion of course.
So, given the context that Palace wouldn't sell without his replacement, and the player they wanted moved elsewhere, how would moving earlier and bigger have helped them land their replacement.Title: Marc Guehi reveals how he's moved on after collapse of £35m deadline day move to Liverpool
"Marc Guehi says it has been 'easy' to move on from his collapsed deadline day move to Liverpool.
The Crystal Palace defender is not losing any sleep after being denied a £35million switch to Merseyside as the Eagles failed to sign a replacement......
(Some direct quotes from him, nothing major just moving on.. )
....A gracious response from Guehi, and the blow was no doubt made easier by how Palace are thriving - third in the Premier League, 18 games unbeaten - but he would be forgiven for feeling disappointed.
After all, the fee was agreed, he had undergone a medical with Liverpool, and a five-year contract was drawn up. A deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League to buy more time.
But that all fell apart because Palace were unable to secure his successor. That was not entirely their fault. They had lined up Brighton defender Igor Julio for a season-long loan, but he decided he wanted to be a West Ham player instead.
For now, Guehi remains at Palace, but for how long is to be seen. He could leave on the cheap in January or for free in the summer.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Inter Milan have all been reported as suitors, so he could become the latest English star to move abroad.
Alternatively, Liverpool may go back in for him, and they will be doubly regretting not signing him after £26million signing Giovanni Leoni suffered an ACL injury against Southampton last week. He is expected to be out for at least a few months.

We all have ideas of who we'd sign. But there's little evidence other additions prevented us from landing Guehi.

It is clear from the context that the collapse of the Marc Guehi transfer to Liverpool was almost entirely a result of our late action in the window, which fatally undermined Crystal Palace's ability to operate.
Waiting until the final hours to fully commit to a lowball offer of £35 million. By holding out for a cheaper deal due to Guehi's contract status and delaying the final, acceptable bid, we essentially ran down the clock on Crystal Palace.
The consequence for Palace being that their primary replacement target, Igor Julio, decided to join West Ham, it was too late for the Eagles to negotiate with any other defender.
Had we come in with the full, final fee a even just a week or two earlier, Palace would have had a sufficient window to secure their replacement before Guehi's transfer was finalised, thereby insulating themselves from the deadline-day rush and the failure of a single target.

How is a fee greater than £35 mill supposed to have landed Palace a €20 mill player, who moved on loan from Brighton to West Ham instead of Palace ?
They spent €23 million on a French centreback on deadline day. So again the finance needed to be provided by LFC via a bigger transfer to action a replacement seem dubious.
How much do you think LFC should have offered Palace for Guehi ?

Again 'it' deliberately tries to confine Crystal Palace to the last minute target they ONLY sought to replace Guehi with - due to the last minute nature of our lowball late bid.
Crystal Palace's valuation of Marc Guéhi was initially set around £55 million. However, reports suggested that any serious offer exceeding £40 million early in the summer window stood a good chance of securing the defender. This high price point was strategically linked to the cost of his potential replacement, as the club was simultaneously exploring an ambitious deal for Sporting CP's highly-rated centre-back Ousmane Diomande, who was valued at £45 million.
Also Manuel Akanji (Manchester City).. Palace were reported to have approached Manchester City about the possibility of signing the Swiss defender as a potential replacement for Guéhi - again much earlier in the summer.
Also please provide a quote by anyone on this forum...who suggests there has been any specific "lack of loyalty to Slot". I spoke of there being less of a bond between the players and Slot versus Klopp yes, but loyalty is ultimately to the club not specifically the manager..
And I would cite Trent, Diaz and Konate as players that have already shown more than a hint of that lack of loyalty - but for different reasons. I doubt one of them does this with Klopp in situ - certainly not all 3.

Thats a direct quote of yours in recent times.Owners well aware of it. Went massive this summer because they know full well, Klopp's charisma and star which is still written across the club won't last forever. Slot's a great coach but he won't hold that together long. He needs to be a super success on the pitch - like Paisley was,*and even then - players won't have that bond with him that they had with Jurgen. We have seen many already show a lack of loyalty.
Get used to it.
And you've been asked to name 1 of the many... we have seen already show a lack of loyalty.

Named 3 - all of them imo have shown a lack of loyalty to Liverpool FC in varying degrees.
1.Trent: the obvious candidate who was in tears as Klopp departed but left for all but free until Real needed his sevices early.
2. Konate: Refusing to sign a new contract and running down his contract
3. Diaz: Less so - but in persuit of more money he has gone to Bayern - to our cost..
I don't see 1 or 3 happening with Klopp.. I see the that bond between the manager - the fans and the players as stronger..
Owners have diluted the role.. Slot isn't really the manager - he is essentially the head coach. It's different.. At least in my opinion.Last edited by Steveo; 3 October 2025, 06:05 PM.

There are a number of players Klopp lost on freebies, and Mane moved to Bayern for a big bumper contract at the end of his career.
So, Diaz moves to Bayern on a grand retirement contract.
Trent in his final year of contract, moved to Real Madrid a decision made long before Slot arrived.
Konate is still at the club, but rumoured to be Real Madrids next free black transfer.
These contract dwindlers are all Klopp players, and did not sign up under Klopp. Well at least we have names now, even if the claim is patchy af.
