    Interesting deal for them that.

Amortisation means over a 5-year deal it'll be affordable and three years from now at the age of 28 he would still have some resale value back to the Prem if he does well.

    • If we have 3 main midfielders..Don and Macca are still able to play a number 8 role as well as 10 in the team.. both get back and defend, Wirzt cannot play in midfield. we will always be one short.

Our win ratio will be higher without Wirzt, If Macca goes and we get in Wharton, you have Gravenberch and Szoboszlai to play in front of him. I prefer Szoboszlai further forward hes better than Wirzt any day of the week

      • John Alridge isn't happy with the people running the club. They are supposedly looking to sell a world class midfielder in order to buy some teenager.

Suppose it depends who the "world class " midfielder is.
There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief

As I said in another recent post, the Devil will be in the detail.

If it's Mac Allister out to part-fund Diomande (19) coming in then I am in all honesty not against that.

What we can't do is to then fail to adequately replace Mac Allister.

It would be like the Diaz thing - selling Diaz I was fine with in isolation, but the failure to acquire a replacement was a wretched decision.

            • That's exactly the trap so many fans are falling into. Saying 'I was fine with selling him in isolation' only works if we live in a vacuum where world-class, 1v1 touchline wingers just grow on trees.

The reality is, the decision to sell him was the failure to replace him. You don't sell a 28-year-old at the absolute peak of his powers - who gave us 17 goals and an insane defensive work rate - without a signed contract already on the table from a replacement.

Who was actually available in the market that could replicate his verticality and chaos factor? No one. By sanctioning the sale to Bayern, the club guaranteed a downgrade on the left flank. Left us with Cody frigging Gakpo FFS… You can't separate the sale from the lack of a replacement…they are two sides of the same flawed coin.

But then again ANYONE who witnessed the title winning season and actually observed would have known this. This is why I said what I said last Summer when it was obvious the club was manufacturing consent from the gullible masses to let arguably our most important player leave… Simply to satiate the owners ridiculous model

                  • Said it before I will say it again our club is now starting a massive re build that will set us back a minimum of 10 years. After spunking loads of money last season I can’t see a world that FSG will spend like that again. Instead I’m predicting we will end up with an even smaller weaker squad than we currently have. Like I said at the time, Slot was brought in to be the fall guy after Klopp and will probably continue to be until his contract ends.

                    • Looks like konate's going, which will spread funds thinner.
Also rumours that alisson wants a move and then there is chelsea interest in wirtz.
Rumour mill gearing up but at least slot looks safe.

I rarely think sides are ever as far away as we might think. That works for both directions, be it relegation spots (we finished closer in points to West Ham than to Arsenal) or to the top of the League.

The current predicament is pretty bad, but we know it only takes the right managerial appointment and a couple of good transfers for something to click - it applies at every club.

Chelsea poor this season, will be more competitive next season. Man United 15th last season, able to get 3rd with Michael Carrick at the helm this time around.

Even ourselves. Evans goes, then a few seasons later we win a Cup Treble. Houllier goes, we win a Champion's League and end up with an unbelievable team a few seasons later in 08/09 which just needed depth (which we never got sadly) to take us towards competing across all fronts. Hodgson goes and Rodgers (who none of us rate) ends up being at the helm for a title tilt because we'd landed on a brilliant player, which can happen.

I'm not saying this to be Sunshine and Rainbows. I think the 26/27 season is going to be hard, hard going. However we are perfectly capable of getting another Manager sooner rather than later (especially if fan pressure rises) and we still have capable players at the club who, with some supplementation, can get us back in the Champion's League if we drop out.

Totally understand the sense of Doom-and-Gloom just now, but a "minimum of 20 years" feels a bit extreme.

For context, Rafa was in charge of a title challenging side in 08/09 and in a 10-year spell we went through the threat of administration, Rafa's sacking, Hodgson's hiring, Meireles on the wing, Rodgers coming in, Emre Can at centre-back, a strike force of Lambert/Balotelli/Borini, Klopp being hired, the Karius Final and a Champion's League win over bloody Tottenham in a 10-year spell.

10 years in football is an eternity. I am deeply concerned (who wouldn't be?) about 26/27 and potentially 27/28 if we don't get our recruitment right, but we still have capable players here who could absolutely respond to a different voice.

New man at the helm please and a return to buying the "on the cusp" lads for semi-reasonable fees rather than cosplaying as Real Madrid and we can get back to being a Boss outfit quicker than you might think.

I agree a rebuild this size isnt guaranteed to push us on and its to be expected that not all new faces will be a success but having the right man at the helm is a must.

That would be ideal, though that will be a release clause situation - we would need to pay the money in one swoop and that could represent a decent chunk out of the budget, versus an amortised deal.
