  • Set pieces

I think we’ve improved a fair bit the last 4 or 5 games and Lord knows we needed to

We’ve defended them better and we’ve been better with our attacking set pieces

Last night it was really goood to see we had a plan of how to score against Sunderland from a corner and we stuck to it and stuck to it and had consistent delivery and got our rewards

Now I’m going to be watching with interest for variations against different teams and free kick routines

Long may we continue to improve

Well it looks like we’re heading in the right direction

Over the last 2 months we’ve transformed our form conceding just two and scoring nine

Gomez’s kong throw to add to that too, how do thaw stattos work if for those as it is a set oiece but they’re rarely scored direct from the throw

3 goals from set pieces today Gakpo should have made it 4 from Joe’s long throw

Liverpool manager Arne Slot says most Premier League games are no longer a "joy to watch" and his "football heart doesn't like" the emphasis on set-pieces this season.

            https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c4gjwm99we8o

Of the total scored in the league this season, 27.5% have been non-penalty set-piece goals - the second-highest rate since 2009-10.

Arsenal's prowess from set-pieces has been a key part of their title challenge, with their 16 goals from corners - three more than anyone else - equalling the most in a Premier League season.

All three of Liverpool's goals in the first half of their 5-2 win against West Ham United on Saturday came from corners.

Set-piece coach Aaron Briggs left Anfield on 30 December and Slot's side have scored the most goals in the league from set-pieces in 2026, excluding penalties.

"You have to accept it," said Slot. "I think it's mainly here in the Premier League. If I watch other leagues I don't think there's so much emphasis on set-pieces.

"If I watch an Eredivisie game, which I still do, I see goals being disallowed and fouls on goalkeepers being given and I think 'wow, that's a big difference'. Here, you can almost hit a goalkeeper in his face and the referee still says 'just go on'.

"Do I like it? My football heart doesn't like it. If you ask me about football, I think about the Barcelona team from 10, 15 years ago. Every Sunday evening you were hoping they would play.

"Now, most of the games I see in the Premier League are not for me a joy to watch but it's always interesting because it's so competitive.

"That is what makes this league great because there is so much competitiveness. Everyone can win against everyone."

Slot accepted that set-pieces are the "new reality of the Premier League" and believes it could even become a theme at junior level.

"We aren't going to change it," added the Dutchman as he previewed Tuesday's game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

"I just wouldn't be surprised if you went to watch a Sunday League match now and the 16-year-olds were completely focused on set-pieces."

He should look at it as a potential advantage in Europe to be perfected

When we played that turgid short passing rubbish that played everyone out of form he claimed it was style over trophies 🏆 🤣

He thought that was better and said the players are learning even though to everyone else it was dire boring abd simply didn’t work nor was it ever got to

How can football's lawmakers fix the corner chaos?

                https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/c0431l6lzpyo

FAPGMOL should be using VAR to look at the cheating going on.
Everybody knows it's happening but no-one's doing anything to stop the holding, wrestling, pushing, blocking.
It's a farce. It's only in the past few seasons (I believe) that it's become an issue.
Cannot believe what some players are allowed to get away with.
There's too much confusion, I can't get no relief

It's ridiculous considering that in other areas of the pitch it would be a foul and a yellow card most of the time

Set piece dilemma… One thing that continues to bug me… Calling Aaron Briggs a "set-piece coach" is wrong in the extreme…. He was acting in the role. The lad was a Man City analyst brought in for individual development, effectively to mind the gap between the academy and the first team.

But because our "new and improved" structure under H’Edwards…aka Hughes/Edwards spent all summer failing to find a proper specialist to replace Georgson, they just decided to wing it. threw a laptop at Briggs and told him to "manage" the dead balls.

And consequently we’ve lost a specialised development coach when we needed home grown lads to be being brought through

I read a report years ago that a high percentage of goals are scored from set pieces, nothings changed.thats why managers hate giving away free kicks outside the area.

                              Absolutely.

'Teams play low-block, teams throw the ball long, teams kick the ball long, teams waste time, teams foul, teams keep playing for set pieces'...

Instead of fucking moaning about stuff, just figure it out and get on with it.
