I think so yes. maybe Alan Hansen. Hansen wasn't a massive physical specimen, like Virgil, but both absolutely dominant in the air, both fantastic readers of the game, and both almost never go to ground when tackling opponents.
We’ve had a few greats Virgil is the best modern day CB I’ve watched Hansen was the best I grew up on Nark Lawrenson was a great CB too barely mentioned as injury did for him early but Mark Wright was an awesome CB and as bad as Souness’ changes were, losing Staunton to the foreign play rule and Wright to back injury I think were major blows

Carragher was a decent enough defender but nothing special,If i recall correctly he started off in midfield? and was too slow for that position. I still can't quite get over why he dived to try to stop an attack against Milan in the final... Talk about leaving yourself for dead.. Thankfully Gerrard had a second half to remember ,and we know what happened not long after!
Too true Justme he was never a top class CB he was at fault for all 3 first half goals in Istanbul too what he’s had for a career and now as a pundit is hugely above what his ability ever warranted
When I wanted Kompany who went for peanuts because of his contract when City had money but no profile was when Rafa tried offloading him to some or somewhere
