  • Konate to Sign a New Deal?

Ibrahima Konate is set to sign a new long-term contract at Liverpool, ending months of speculation over his Anfield future.
Konate will be a free agent this summer as things stand and has been linked with a move away from Anfield for several months, with Real Madrid repeatedly named as a potential destination.

However, the centre-back revealed after Sunday's 2-1 win over Everton that he is on the cusp of extending his stay on Merseyside, claiming a move away was never part of his thinking having become a mainstay of the team since his 2021 switch from RB Leipzig.
“To be fair, there are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are [now] close to an agreement," Konate explained. "I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way.

“For sure there is a big chance I’m here next season. This is what I always wanted. I’m waiting to sort the contract but when everything is sorted you will have to ask (sporting director) Richard Hughes what I said to him in September, November and he’s going to say something to make everyone quiet.

“Yes [it's taken a long time] but this is a negotiation. With Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah last season it was exactly the same, I think they signed the contract in April and this is maybe how the club want it.”

He added: “I think I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, for the players of my generation, everyone to be fair. We know this is part of the football life. The legends are going to leave one day and after it's going to be our turn to take the lead, you know.

"I started [doing] this already since years ago and more in the last few months and it's a big responsibility. But we start and we play football to have this kind of chance and to make sure everything is fine for this amazing club. But I need the help of everyone as well. I cannot do everything alone.

“That's why I said, when everything's going to be sorted, I wish you had a discussion with Richard and asked what I said to him a few months ago before everyone talked about everything and when he’s going to reply, you will see. I just wish that."
    "I am the Normal One."

    Hopefully he signs up.

However, he like Virg, will continue to get rinsed if Slot persists with his midfield shenanigans. The two centre halves are not being helped with pushing everyone forward.

Things just go from bad to worse. He is error prone player, one that is getting worse, and one who was angling for a move to Real Madrid. Him signing a new deal is potentially just another nail in our coffin. We need to bring in some new good - top quality players, not keep any substandard ones we already have.

Read the article posted below, particularly the bit about Konate supposedly being "on an upward ascent again".

Is that 'journalist' taking the piss? He has probably watched very few of our games this season, if any of them at all.

One thing about Konate is his fitness. He used to be a part-timer giving us 20 games a season, injured half the time but somehow he seems over that and a few months ago he'd already clocked up more league appearances for Slot than Klopp.

Klopp seemed a bit frustrated with Konate at times.

And Slot hasnt really had the option to drop Konate, although Klopp opted for Quansah over Konate on occasion.

19 will be delighted when he's signed up.

Similar to yourself, I am happy for him to be part of our back-line and one of our four/five centre-back options.

What I don't want is him playing 38 League games or anything close.

Needs to be decent rotation in that area of the pitch.

I have mixed feelings about Konate signing on. It's good we're not losing a decent defender for nothing but at the same time he shouldn't be on silly wages

Think thats great news,it means funds can go elsewhere instead of replacing konate.

Agree with Jozza on the midfield issue. Get some decent protection there and our defence is fine.
Hopefully if he does sign he forms partnerships with Leoni and Dinner Jacket.

No sign of an agreement with the current line being that it’s now the club that aren’t sure

Based on his performances this year the club shouldn't be sure. But letting him go for free will cost us a lot to replace him both financially and team stability.

For me it comes down to how much he wants. If he wants something close to Van Dijk money then he should be let go.
