Liverpool U23s ended the 2020-21 Premier League 2 campaign in style after a 2-0 win at Leicester City on Monday night.
All the goals came in the second half with captain Ben Woodburn netting the opener, and U18s winger Kaide Gordon firing a late effort on his U23s debut.
After drawing 2-2 with Leicester City in Kirkby last week, Barry Lewtas’ charges produced an excellent display in the Premier League 2 return fixture, at the Foxes training centre in Seagrave.
The Reds were unfortunate not to break the deadlock after eight minutes when Leighton Clarkson was denied at point-blank range by a brilliant save from Jakub Stolarczyk.
Just past the half hour, Fidel O’Rourke, who earlier today signed a new deal with the club, was so unlucky not to claim his first Premier League 2 goal, when his effort was cleared off the line by Mitchell Clark.
On the stroke of half-time the home side wasted a glorious chance. Substitute Tyrese Shade raced clear and found Kasey McAteer who missed the target from close range.
Just after the restart, O’Rourke came so close again when he struck the post and when the ball fell for Luis Longstaff, the No.7 fired straight at Stolarczyk.
The pressure then finally paid off for the young Reds as Woodburn opened the scoring just before the hour mark, when he found space on the left side of the box and finished superbly.

On 71 minutes, Lewtas introduced 16-year-old winger Gordon for a Premier League 2 debut and he celebrated it in style by adding a second goal in the final minute of the contest, following a pass from O’Rourke.
Reflecting on the win, Lewtas told Liverpoolfc.com: "It was a great way to end our Premier League 2 campaign.
"The lads were brilliant tonight and they worked so hard for each other.
"We played some great football and created a lot of chances.
"It was great to see Ben get a goal and it was a really nice moment to see Kaide get a first goal at this level for us."
Liverpool U23s: Ojrzynski, Gallacher, Beck, Clayton, Savage, Clarkson, Longstaff (Walls, 87), Dixon-Bonner, O’Rourke, Glatzel (Wilson, 90), Woodburn (Gordon, 71).
Subs not used: Hardy, Hughes.
