  • World Athletics Championships

The World Athletics Championships are taking place in Doha, the Capital City of Qatar.

The stadium has been close to empty throughout the competition.

    Another political farce?

I saw that half the marathon runners had pulled out. Apparently it's quite hot there.
Perhaps it was part of the World Cup package?

A bit late to the party eh Redebreck.

It's been shocking since it began. Qatar getting these championships was all about money and nothing to do with what was best for the sport and its competitors.

During the women's marathon 28 of the 68 starters failed to finish due to the very harsh conditions (the race was run at midnight), and the crowd was sparse during the mens 100m final, which is supposed to be the championship's 'blue ribbon' event.

Dina Asher-Smith picks up a silver medal in the 100m behind Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She's come back from having a child and runs .01 seconds outside her PB.

Sorry to be so cynical, but things like this and Jamaica's sudden rise to prominence/dominance in the sprints makes me raise my eyebrows a tad.

          Jamaica, hmmmm...
I thought their runners would be more "chilled out" rather than being at "top speed".

Is that what you say when someone asks you to take the rubbish out or get a round in?

                    K J T

Katerina Johnson-Thompson, a scouse lass, is performing in the Heptathlon at the World Championships this week.

Seems like she's doing OK and could be in line for a medal.

Oh, and BTW the attendance figures are supposedly improving - today the stadium is reportedly "almost half full".

Zola Budd, that's going back. Was it Mary Decker? Showing your age there!

Yes it was. We could do with a new Alan Wells.

Sets it up nicely for Tokyo next year.
