If I've mistaken the tone, then my apologies.

Can you see the logic in having good players with further room to fulfil their potential being available most of the time being a better option than having more talented players who are in their prime or just passed it hardly ever be available?

Yes - but I see far more in going after the next Suarez - As well as the real need to target and land the next Virgil & Alisson. Players already there. Straight in. That has to happen at least once a season minimum.

…on top of continuing to source the next Salah & the next Mané…

We aren’t doing that at all. We are going for potential in the main. Looking for the next Coutinho. And we know why that is.

I'd argue that's exactly what we're doing. But this is more to do with scouting then it is on money spent.

I would say other than Ali and Thiago, we haven't signed a single 'finished' product in the last 10 years. Suarez was plucked from the Dutch league and was reletively unkown Even big Virg was dicking about in Scotland for a long time before a few seasons in the bottom half of the Prem.

Wijnaldum, Mane, Shaqiri, Fabinho, Robertson were all signed from bottom half / relegated clubs and teams from outside the elite divisions.

It's good scouting, along side a manager that can get the best out of them.

We (the scouts) wont always get it right.

And it will be no good if we dont have a manager that can get the best out of them either. Equally, it wont matter how much money we spend if the manager isn't up to scratch.

Good scouting, good players, good manager.

Throught our entire history you can probably count on one hand where we've shopped right from top shelf.

Luis Suarez - had been a Uruguay International for 4 years - count them - before we bought him. He was far and away the best player in the Dutch league and everyone knew it.

Only priced relatively low due to bitting an opponent in Holland. A theme that would continue as he forced through another relatively low ball exit to Barca.

To suggest Virgil was a relative unknown is beyond fanciful - Conte at Chelsea was desperate for him for a kick off..

    https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/chelsea-transfer-news-virgil-van-dijk-liverpool-antonio-conte-defender-targets-a8149906.html

We also know that City wanted him

    https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/van-dijk-man-city-liverpool-18544507

He was courted by elite clubs at the time and for very good reason - Ditto Fabinho and certainly Alisson

As for the rest - well it's stating the obvious to an extent. But you are sorely mistaken IF you believe we are in for this calibre of player and at the frequency we were back in 2018.. And we all know why..

Liverpool were interested in Leny Yoro before he signed for Manchester United, but were put off by his request for guaranteed game time.

The 18-year-old defender has moved to Old Trafford from Lille in a £52m deal, with the Red Devils also beating Real Madrid to the signing.

It has been reported that the Reds pulled out of the race for Yoro because it appeared that he was set on a move to Real Madrid, but that is not the only reason.

The Athletic report that the teenager wanted guarantees over playing time and Liverpool were not prepared to make him any promises

They're not messing about are they. That's 2 very good signings in him and that lanky striker. Meanwhile we haven't even a sniff of a decent signing yet and it's nearly August. Great.

We have almost never gone in for absolute records although we have done it at times.

However.....players like Kenny - Ray Kennedy - Barnes - Beardsley - Virgil and others. Pfft why did we bother?

Mark Lawrenson @ or close to a British Transfer Record in 1981 at £900,000 OR a Transfer record IF you go by Transfermarkt. Certainly he was the Virgil Van Dijk signing of his day.

Peter Beardsley – £1.9 million 1987. British Transfer Record

Fernando Torres - £20-26 million in 2007. Biggest signing of the summer in Europe..

Virgil Van Dijk - £75 million - January 2018 - A world record transfer fee for a defender!

    Alisson Becker - £66 million - July 2018 - A world record fee for a goal keeper.

Kenny Dalglish - £440,000 - @ or close to the British Transfer Record at the time of his signing DOUBLE what the next most expensive Liverpool signing had been.

John Barnes - £900,000/£1 million - one of the 3 most expensive signings that summer along with the most expensive Beardsley.

That's 7 inbred fingers up on the top shelf (pure filth) before we go into other players that were at or close to record fees and certainly players considered to be top shelf - for the league at the time. The likes of Collymore - Ray Kennedy - Heskey and others.

Interesting that we’ve only broken the transfer record once since the start of the premier league.

    Collymore in 1995

Where are United have broken it 7 times & Chelsea 4.
