Let's see. They're only good signings if they work out.

This is a club that bought Falcao, bought Ibrahimovic, bought Di Maria, bought Lukaku, bought Martial, bought Varane, bought Schweinsteiger - and we were all meant to "be afraid, be very afraid" - and now they yo-yo in and out of the Champion's League while playing very boring football.

Where are United have broken it 7 times & Chelsea 4.
And look how much they have won in the Premier league era.

I understand we can't throw money around like those 2. But we should be spending more than we are on players that are close to, if not the finished article.

The signings of both virgil and allisson should be enough evidence to the owners of what can happen when you spend on top players.

Still plenty of time before the season starts so hopefully we will be pleasantly surprised.

Mark Lawrenson @ or close to a British Transfer Record in 1981 at £900,000 OR a Transfer record IF you go by Transfermarkt. Certainly he was the Virgil Van Dijk signing of his day.

Peter Beardsley – £1.9 million 1987. British Transfer Record

Fernando Torres - £20-26 million in 2007. Biggest signing of the summer in Europe..

Virgil Van Dijk - £75 million - January 2018 - A world record transfer fee for a defender!

    Alisson Becker - £66 million - July 2018 - A world record fee for a goal keeper.

Kenny Dalglish - £440,000 - @ or close to the British Transfer Record at the time of his signing DOUBLE what the next most expensive Liverpool signing had been.

John Barnes - £900,000/£1 million - one of the 3 most expensive signings that summer along with the most expensive Beardsley.

That's 7 inbred fingers up on the top shelf (pure filth) before we go into other players that were at or close to record fees and certainly players considered to be top shelf - for the league at the time. The likes of Collymore - Ray Kennedy - Heskey and others.
A few names and values on there that had escaped my memory. But I think the idea is there (or thereabouts ).

Christ, what a team that 87-91 side was. Peter Beardsley and John Barnes are the reason I got into football.

Most of our signings throughout the 90s were utter pish.

United signed Roy Keane, we signed Nigel Clough. United signed Peter Schmiechel and we signed David James. United signed Eric Cantona, we signed Stan Colymore (though this one is slightly harsh as Collymore had bags of ability).

Both clubs had the 'fortune' of having an excellent crop of youngsters come through at roughly the same time. United surrounded them with professional hardworkers, we surrounded them with the likes of Collymore and Neil Ruddock!

Adding to that - look at current United to City over the last decade. Both have spent eye-watering amounts of money but City have spent it far, far better.

Good scouting, good players, good manager.

Not the ‘It’s Balotelli or nothing’ type owners.

I saw Barnes many times - At Anfield and all around the the South East. And what a player.. WHAT A PLAYERRRR! Literally towered over his peers in terms of sheer quality.

Kenny was always my idol - my hero (I was full on Bleasdale Scully) but in truth Barnes was ahead... he is one of - if not the best players to ever play for this club - has to sit alongside Suarez for me. hat side were magic BUT Barnes was a cut above.

Hard to take cities reported spending seriously with off the books payments.
At the peak of his powers and best goal/Assist stats, sterling took a pay cut by the books.
