If Gordon can sustain his level, it makes sense on paper.

11 goals, 10 assists in the Premier League last season from a player who will be 24 in February and may not have reached their ceiling yet. Would qualify as Home-grown.

I do think Diaz is a better player than some give him credit for, there's not many better in that mould.

I'd take Gordon for Diaz even if it was for £20M more than the Diaz fee BUT you know we'd have to sell Diaz first then Newcastle would have us over a barrel as we'd be desperate to get him in. Its got potential xfer committee fuck-up written all over it.

They valued him at £75m at a time when they needed to meet the PSR - they're not struggling in the same way now, so I imagine Gordon requiring a bid in the £100m region - though who knows.

For an extra 5 or so years of potential contribution from a player who supports the club, has higher output and is Home-grown, I would be happy to see us pay a bit of a premium for him. If you had asked me 12 months ago, treating it in isolation, if I would be happy to see us pay a record-breaking fee for us on him I probably would have laughed myself silly, but given the current market, his output and the future-proofing aspect (Diaz out, Gordon in) it may very well prove worthwhile over the course of his possible career here.

If we do make a signing or 2 in alternate positions to somewhat rescue what has been a poor window, we'll still probably need to make spaces if we are bringing lads in with the 25-man squad registration.

3+9+8+5 = 25 lads, so even if Zubimendi had come in, we'd still have had to ensure a sale or loan the other way to make a space (Bajcetic out on loan seems the most obvious, if we struggled to sell Sepp or Endo or Tsimikas let's say) for them.

We don't have to sell anyone, a few players just won't have a part to play and probably go out on loan

YOU have been alluding to a surplus of first team players... But many are players brought into first team football by Klopp ONLY due to a lack of fit seniors - the knock on effect of too heavy a burden on a squad with too many hard miles on the clock and a lack of genuine backing.
