A good sale is a good sale - know what you mean though, regarding the wider context of squad depth.

In that sense it will depend if we keep Gomez or not. Having Van Dijk, Konate, Quansah, Gomez at the club will not really make us "worse" than last season given Matip's lack of minutes and Sepp not having been here - it's little to no change.

We should absolutely 100% still be trying for a centre-back of course, but the above wouldn't stress me out particularly.

What I would find really *hits-head-off-table-repeatedly* would be if Gomez leaves too, with no centre-back arriving, so our options are Van Dijk, Konate and Quansah - with Nat Phillips I guess staying at the 4th centre-back. That would be needlessly risky, short-sighted and bordering on arrogant, unless there is someone at the club they're convinced is coming through the way Quansah did - which I don't see right now.

It won't make us "worse" than last season but we needed a cb last season. So we need one again this year if Sepp goes.

Konate will get injured.
Virgil is getting older and we have more games to play this season. He will need breaks.
Quansah is still learning as was evident by being withdrawn at half time of the 1st league game.
Gomez, I personally don't like at CB but in the cup games against lower opposition should be fine. If he stays injury free this year.

I thought we would go for a top CB this year. Even planning for Virgil's departure we should be buying one this year. Right now our futur planning is looking very lacking.
