We can't add a centreback.
It can't be considered replacing Matip.
We must keep our 4th choice u21 keeper in our 25 man PL squad.

It would be nice if one of the “we need a new CB in January” people would explain which of the current CBs they intend to replace.

Do they have to replace any of them, right now? A better cb option gives a chance to rest virgil more and blood in the new guy for when virgils playing time reduces even more.

I don't see us signing a cb by the way. But I have wanted a better option then gomez for a while now. Virgil has maybe 2 years at top level left? Will he even be here next year?

Can't speak for others, but the general consensus I hear from people I chat to is to either -

- Replace Quansah with a higher quality option so we (if we use Badé as an example) something like Van Dijk/Konate/Badé/Gomez as our four (whether they want to sell Quansah or loan him seems to vary) OR

- Replace Gomez (27) with a younger option (will use Badé, 24, as an example again) so that a few years from now we have a centre-back pairing entering prime years, with a further-developed Quansah behind them ahead of Van Dijk's departure at the end of, let's say, the 27/28 season.

If they’re going to come into the squad in Jan then yes, they need to replace someone. I’m still not clear on what you’re asking for. There’s a world of difference between a better 3rd choice than Gomez and someone to replace VVD.

Each club can only have a squad of 25 registered with the PL. I’m not hearing people suggest we buy a CB in Jan who doesn’t make the squad. So someone has to go, or this CB we sign in Jan doesn’t play until next season.

I agree we need a long term replacement for VVD but that’s not needed in Jan. So I still want to hear from those who think we need a CB in Jan. Who are they replacing?

The new signing can take James Norris place in the squad.

I'm only using 3 goalkeepers, so dropping our 4th choice goalie Harvey Davies obviously 🙄

Why can't a cb in January be the long term replacement? If we were looking to sign someone in January, I'd expect it to be for the long term. Not sure why it's a different conversation especially given virgil might be playing his last season for us

Let’s assume that VVD stays. That’s what the noise suggests is most likely.

We could sign a long term replacement in Jan but why is that a priority given that we have the best defensive partnership in the league? Why couldn’t it wait until the summer when it’s easier?

As I said, I dont think we will go for one in january. My concern has always being around the injury records of both Konate and gomez. Konate has been good for that this season up until the Madrid game. Gomez went down today so we are potentially down to 2 CBs. This is why I would have liked a cb in the summer. But maybe I'm being greedy.

If you're looking for an answer from our starting 2 CB's, it's Konate due to his injury record.
