I agree both Virgil and Salah need two more years! and its up to Trent to make his own mind up.

If there's a stumbling block I suspect contract length is the more likely of the two problems rather than wages - it will be interesting to find out in time what the issue was and what compromises (if agreements are reached) were made in X years time when players/agents release social media statements, or write books or whatever.

People like us probably back Mo to still be putting up good numbers when he is 35 or 36 whereas Edwards/analytics staff/FSG lean more towards the risk of increased likelihood of injury and/or burnout being too great and not wanting to pay (for example) Ł350k-per-week to someone if they miss half a season through injury.

If it's someone like Jota (or formerly Sturridge) you can absolutely see their point - but Virg and Mo have had exceptional records outside of an injury that was hardly Virgil's fault (Pickford, knee) and both seem to find ways to conserve energy and recover quickly - you'd love to be a "fly on the wall" for the who-blinks-first of all the crap between agents and clubs.

I'd certainly feel comfortable giving them both 2-3 extra years, though my gut feeling is the club thinks (something like) 1 extra year with an option to extend if certain parameters are met is more appropriate.

It would be amazing if we got an announcement after the League Cup Final, or if we reached the Champion's League quarter-finals or something....and just ride a crest of positive momentum right to the end of the season.

With all of us not knowing what the “ fly in the ointment “ is, in the current negotiations…

However, given how a lot of LFC’s success has been a combination of fantastic coaching ie Klopp and now Arne and the success of our data analysis, regarding the transfers in and out of the club, unearthing some real gems in real terms for very little money.

Surely, if you just look at the performances of both VVD and Salah on the pitch, the argument to sign them is just overwhelming given their current levels of performance, even if their levels do drop off by 10-15 % over the next two years, they are so far ahead of everybody else in their respective positions, that drop off is manageable…. Van Dyjk and Salah with a 10-15% drop off will still be better than 90% of any other players in World football.

So if its not the eye test, is the stumbling block the actual physical data that is being produced with each passing game, maybe the goals of Salah and the current defensive solidity of VVD are just flying in the face of the data, if the Data is showing an escalating loss of performance that is simply not revealing itself on the pitch… and they are all convinced that the underlying Data is telling them that what we are witnessing is the final death throes of these two legends, who are simply performing so well on adrenaline and in reality it’s genuinely only a matter of time before their performances will fall off a cliff…

Who knows tbh, but if that is the case, maybe given the numbers involved they are just being ruthless rather than being sentimental…

TBF Liverpool throughout their history have always allowed players to leave who looked like they were still in their prime, when in fact post Liverpool their performances never reached the same heights and the decision to let them go, proved to be a brilliant shout…

I am not saying that this argument currently applies to VVD and Salah, but maybe just maybe that is the “ fly in the ointment “
