It was us - but think the point was one of agreement that - nothing is done until it’s actually done. Which is so true.

Here’s more fuel for the fire though:

I think Feckers brother came in at last minute and scuppered the deal..He took over everything.. I don't think the issue was an injury

The big difference between Virgil's fee then and Wirtz possible transfer fee now is that we aren't going to be selling any of our players for £186m to fund such a transfer.

We'd paid for Virgil and he arrived at the club before Coutinho left for Barca and definitely long before we'd received the full alotment of his transfer fee from Barca (including any addons).

It's arguable that Coutinho's transfer potentially helped fund our acquisition of Allisson and Fabinho who came in the transfer window that followed, but it's highly unlikely that the Countinho and Virgil transfers had anything to do with each other budgetwise.

FSG funded Virgil's transfer out of their own pockets.
A little-known fact that many (particularly on here) don't like to acknowledge.

Yeah, but he did have a dodgy knee and history with injuries on it that was a big question mark over whether it was a wise deal.

And the subsequent trajectory of his career following the failure of that deal - including how those knee-issues continued to come up - implies that that was one deal we were wise or lucky (depending on how you feel it played out) not to have seen through.

When or if he comes.. That means Curtis Jones will go further down the pecking order.. we'll have 3 players to play in 2 roles.
Macca Wirtz and Szoboszlai... sometimes we'll play all 4 ie with Gravenberch and have Wirtz as the false 9. you have enough movement in there with Macca and Szoboszlai..to get in the box and get goals.. Our biggest issue this season was against PSG when were out numbered in midfield. we need to rectify that

Well feckir claimed it wasnt because of an injury this deal fell through.. was a lot of smoke and mirrors around that transfer. Guess we'll never quite know the truth

We're one of the highest earning clubs in the world. All of our transfer spending has come via the club's income, not FSG's. The only money that they've shelled out in regards to us is the money they initially paid to acquire the club.

Any kind of staggering of Coutinho's transfer fee is irrelevant. Ultimately that money was used to help fund purchases including the likes of Alisson, Fabinho and Van Dijk. FSG almost certainly knew that Coutinho was off and that we'd be getting a hefty fee for him. As a result of this they could well have made sure that a number of deals including for the likes of Van Dijk had effectively already been sanctioned and were good to go.

We'll never know this for sure, but given our transfer history, or should I say our frequent lack of it under FSG, I'd say there's a very good chance that at least one of those three signings doesn't happen if Coutinho wasn't sold for such a massive amount of money as he was.

Every man and his dog knows that the Coutinho dosh funded both Virgil and Alisson and plenty of Fabinho too.

“My job is to make Liverpool as strong as possible”.

in 2023, Klopp reflected on a period when “money was less of an issue because Phil [Coutinho] went to Barcelona and we could do two sensational transfers,” referring to the signings of Van Dijk and Alisson.“

It’s not beyond possibility that we recoup close to £200 this summer if everything works out. We are Premier league champions and revenues are at record levels. There is no reason why we can’t emulate that period - which catapulted us from top 4 candidates to the top of European football.
