I hope if we do get him we have some budget left over for other areas

I do want him, but no point spending the budget on one player when we need players in different areas

CB LB after frimpong for starters...

Worried about the Konate situation...... don't want him to leave on a free, we already need a CB fot the future- and a good backup option or a replacement for konate, Quansah isn't upto it. Gomez is broken.

Is there an argument, that Wirtz will be utilised as a direct replacement for Nunez but used more like a Firmino style player in a double number 10 position rather than an out and out number 9…
The wonderful thing about a player like Wirtz is that he could be used in any number of ways to facilitate rotation -

    Utilising Wirtz

    In a 4-3-3

    ..............Gravenberch

    .........Wirtz................Mac Allister

    or -

    ..............Gravenberch

    .........Szoboszlai................Wirtz

    or in attack -

    .........Salah..................Wirtz

    ..................Núńez/Jota

    or -

    .........Wirtz..................Diaz

    ....................Salah

    or -

    ........Salah..................Diaz

    ...................Wirtz

    In a 4-2-3-1

    ...........Gravenberch........Mac Allister.........

    .........................Wirtz

    or -

    ...........Szoboszlai........Mac Allister.........

    .........................Wirtz

    to faciliate something like -

    ...........Szoboszlai........Mac Allister.........

    .......Salah...........Wirtz.............Diaz

    ..........................Jota

    Lots of possibilites.

    As to affording him?

    - Elliott and Kelleher could be sold to eat into a chunk if he is rotating with Szoboszlai.
    - Jota or Darwin (and Kelleher) could be sold to eat into a chunk if he is going to play up top.
    - Diaz (and Kelleher) could be sold to eat into a chunk if he is going to drift in from the left, ie a "reverse Salah"

Key thing IF HE'S COMING is not to neglect other areas, but hopefully he can have a transformative impact on the pitch and give us the capacity to rotate some players a bit more (65/35 or 75/15 so players get breaks) and get us closer to a squad that can manage an attempt at a Premier League and Champion's League double, which was possible this season, but those challenges always become more realistic with one or two "stardust" additions - and he certainly would be that.

If we get our money back for Nunez, we'll have paid a big chunk of Wirtz's fee.

That's definitely one of the likely outcomes.

Darwin looks like he isn't going to "work" for us unfortunately - I always bias towards fitness/availability and age when factoring in sales, so I personally would sell Jota before I would sell Darwin for example (though 100% understand why others would feel differently, given Jota's intelligence and finishing) but yes - no surprise if Darwin departs as part of the funding, especially if we decide to utilise Wirtz as a Firmino 2.0 sort of player.

Surely we're taking a loss? Unless he goes to Saudi and even then I'd be surprised if we got the lot back.

Looking like a player plus cash deal. Quansah and or Elliott look likeliest as they have previously shown interest in both players

I think we turned down a Ł70m bid in Jan. I think we should get somewhere near that in the summer.
