Apart from the fact that Diaz is 28 and Rodrygo I think 24, Rodrygo can play every position across the front line and maybe even a 10. Think he feels like he has something to prove as well.
And frankly it just looks like Diaz wants to go.

The best finishers in the Premier League last season in terms of goal conversions:

    🥇 Alexander Isak (25%)
    🥈 Bryan Mbeumo (24.39%)
    🥉 Jean-Philippe Mateta (23.3%)
Nor me - especially if the fee was £50m or less.

Isak has 23-in-34 and 21-in-30 in the League in the last couple of seasons, so he's scoring more than Mateta in the League, but it's 7-9 goals more if we're taking his best season (23) versus the 14+16 of Mateta.

If I thought we could get the more injury-resilient Mateta in and (let's pretend he starts up top) he could get that 14-16 up to 17-19, you're looking at getting most of Isak's goal return, for about a third of the price Newcastle want, with seemingly more robustness.

It's not a guarantee - nothing is - but from a risk v reward perspective I don't think it's the worst option to consider. Not my first choice to go for a player of his age, but if it's a stop-gap for a season or two until we can identify a younger target that's available for slightly less silly money than some of the fees that will be happening......yeah, I could be on board.

Besides my general fondness for bringing the average squad age down, there's something really appealing about the idea of players on one side of the pitch (be it wide forward, full-back, the left half-space or the 8 biased towards the left) all being younger so their on-pitch chemistry can grow over the years and become more automated.

    Gakpo - 26
    Mac Allister - 26
    Rodrygo - 24
    Wirtz - 22
    Kerkez - 21

It'd be really great to see what could grow there with those lads available.

Mentioning because it could impact us -

It'll be very interesting to see if Newcastle being advanced with Ekitike actually opens a door for us attempting Isak (even if it's next Summer) or if it's simply Newcastle strengthening seriously to try and become a regular Champion's League participant.

I hope so. I just don't see how they're splurging that much without bringing a fair bit and there's only Gordon,Isak or Bruno who's fetch high fees I'd think.
They were in for that Pedro cunt too before he went to Chelsea.
Maybe they are just going for it but they were allegedly close to PSR limits not long ago.

I think they were pretty tight for it a while back, but at the end of 23/24 they got most of £70m from Anderson and Minteh sales.

Can't speak on 24/25 but now that they're a Champion's League side you'd think they have a bit more wiggle-room and they still have the option of selling someone like Gordon if they do want to balance things out - so I think they can probably have Ekitike and Isak without a PSR panic - but just will need to make a sale somewhere.

Hard to know. I do know that the arrival of Wirtz lifts us, so if we can compliment that further in the starting XI (not dismissing Kerkez and Frimpong, but it's a gauntlet of sorts to reach peak Trent+Robbo levels, though I do think they will....) we are laughing - and a top striker would certainly be a big victory.

We've apparently rejected a £58.5m bid from Bayern for Diaz today.

He and his Agent suggested to the club he required an extension/ new contract or let him leave.

    Apparently.

However the player has also said he’s happy to see out his contract and leave on a free.

It’s not new news, it’s been doing the rounds for weeks.

Also this story of a Bayern off being rebuffed has been around since last week.

    Sky have finally caught up.

Saw a few interviews where he had said he is happy to stay until the end of his contract. Based on reported salary he obviously wants more money. Can't really blame him.

Is it good business from us to let players like trent, Diaz and konate leave on a free? With the latter two it feels if we give them the wages they want they would sign. Are they worth it?

    Isak

Mateta will come in for £34m as back up striker
    Giovanni Leoni (Young Parma CB)

Give yer head a wobble it’s obvious
Mateta is 6ft 4, Leoni 6ft 5. It's almost as if the team has returned to training and someone has realised how short our players are next to Virgil.
