That's a possibility especially since we have signed Leoni. Although I'd suspect palace would simply keep him until next summer. For the price they are asking (rumoured to be around the 40mil mark) what could be the hold up?

I'd imagine we don't want to set a precedent.

We are very consistent with having a valuation for players and typically not exceeding it (if buying) or accepting much lower (if selling) and this stance probably helps us a fair bit when negotiating transfers, or dealing with clubs/agents in general.

If we suddenly pay £40m for a lad who only has a year left on his deal, then we likely have difficulty taking advantage of such situations in the future.

If our valuation is, let's say, £32.5m - then I can understand us not wanting to be seen to "just pay the extra" given his contract. A bit different when they have 3 years left on their deal.

We overpaid for Ox instead of getting him on a free, maybe we learned a lesson there.

But for a player of his caliber and age it would still represent excellent value at 40mil.

Hold on a minute… just hold on a cotton pickin minute

I thought Liverpool had just bought the League this window with their £69m splurged on a new striker ….

“Chelsea used six attackers signed for a combined £250m in their Premier League opener, but could not find a way to score against Crystal Palace.”

Every pound we spend seems to be multiplied by 100 to make a story for the media.

And don’t forget the £200m Utd spent on three new strikers too, go draw a blank at home in their opener

Miller next it will be LFC failing to win the league after dropping points in one game. after splurging all that money on new signings.

We are also to blame for the situation with Isak. even though half way through last season he told Howe and Newcastle he wanted to leave in the summer.

The media and certain pundits are also keeping very quiet when it comes to the current Wissa to Newcastle situation, something that isn't that dissimilar to what's going on with us and Isak. If you'll excuse the comparison, it's like us being described as the "Galactic Empire", whilst Newcastle are being portrayed as the "Rebel Alliance", when in fact the opposite is much closer to the truth.

Let's break this down. One is a global sporting institution, a six-time European champion, attempting to leverage its financial and media might to extract the prized asset from a club trying to build. The other is a rumour about Yoane Wissa. To suggest these are 'not that dissimilar' could be said to show a level of delusion usually reserved for those who think the prequel trilogy was a cinematic masterpiece.
